Intensity: category 1, sustained winds near the centre of 85 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 120 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 45 kilometres of 17.4 degrees South, 106.3 degrees East , 960 kilometres west northwest of Exmouth and 780 kilometres south of Christmas Island .
Movement: west at 17 kilometres per hour .
Tropical Cyclone Courtney has developed overnight over open waters in the Indian Ocean well to the northwest of the WA. Courtney is expected to continue to move westwards into the Indian Ocean and intensify further in coming days.
Tropical Cyclone Courtney will not impact the Western Australian coast, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands or Christmas Island.
