‘Mattias,’ theDoctor said quietly. ‘Get everyone back, away from the fire. It’s come for theice-ball. Don’t get in its way. Just let it through.’
Several people had seen the creature now. They leaped to their feet. Oneman – Jedkah – brandished a shovel. ‘Who are you? What do you want?’ heshouted.

Mattias pulled Jedkah out of the way as the huge creature lashed out athim. Its massive fist caught the end of the shovel, sending it spinning away.

‘Back!’ Mattiasyelled. ‘Everyone back, out of its way. Let it get the ice-ball and it’ll justgo away.’

‘What is it?’Maria asked as they all gathered on the far side of the fire.

He didn’t need telling again. Mattias grabbed the ball of ice from besidethe fire and hurled it at the approaching Warrior. It narrowly missed theWarrior’s head and landed in the snow nearby.

At the edge of the group, one of the farmers turned and ran – hurryingback to the safety of his home, no doubt. Perhaps he was the sensible one,Maria thought. Ignoring the people now, the Ice Warrior reached down toretrieve the melting ball of ice, grasping it firmly, then turning and stampingaway, back into the night. Immediately several people hurried to help Benedick,the man who had been knocked aside.

‘What now?’Mattias asked as the creature was swallowed up by the darkness.

‘We need to getback to Christmas,’ the Doctor said. ‘At least, I do. Why don’t you all stayand have breakfast. Make sure Benedick is all right.’

So like I said – I need to find out what’s really going on, and you all need to eat your breakfast.’ He stared off into the darkness, the Ice Warrior’s footsteps stamped through the snow showing where it had gone. ‘I think you’re going to need it.’

Elias was angry. Essbur and Ssardak watched impassively as he stamped in the snow and waved his arms.You could have hurt someone. Actually – you did hurt someone. There was no need. I had it all in hand.’

For several moments the only sound was the rasping breath of the Ice Warriors. Then Ssardak decided: ‘It is unimportant. I have recovered the other capsule, so we have them all. And soon Zontan will complete his mission.’

Stealth was all important until Zontan had completed his mission. Untilthen, he needed to remain unobserved. The massive Warrior was not used tohiding and avoiding confrontation. If he had been able to bring his sonicdisruptor, he could simply have walked in and completed his task. But the GrandMarshal had insisted they could not take the risk of the disruptor beingdetected. No weapons, no communications – just standard armour, and the inertcomponents that Lord Ssardak and Essbur would now be retrieving and assembling.

Massive metal gates across asnow-strewn pathway leading up to the main building. Inside, Zontan knew, waswhat he sought.

Occasionally one would emerge from the warmth of the interior tolook at the sky and perhaps make a note of how much snow was swirling throughthe air. As the night progressed, Zontan built up a picture of the humanschedule – how often they checked outside, how frequently they serviced the machines,when the humans were replaced by other humans…

A thick chain secured the gates, looped through the metal and held by alarge padlock. Zontan ignored the chain, and forced the gates open. The chainclanked and protested, shrieked, and snapped– broken links scattering in the snow. As Zontanapproached the main building, the snow around him thickened. He could see theflakes swirling upwards from a wide chimney thrust high into the night sky,silhouetted stark against one of the moons. As they swirled up from the snowfarm, the flakes were so tightly packed they looked like a thin column ofsteam.

The heavy wooden doors to the main building opened easily. For a momentZontan stood on the threshold, checking for any sign of life from inside. Allhe could hear was the heavy clanking of the turning cogs and gears, theslopping of the water from the spring below the ground gurgling up into the snow-chambers.The compressors that chilled the air to below freezing, and the whirr of thefans that blew the new-formed snow up and out of the chimney to disperse acrossthe landscape ready for harvesting.

The Doctor had not been back in the Clock Tower for more than a fewminutes when there was a hammering on the door.

‘Here forcenturies, and not a moment’s peace and quiet,’ he muttered as he went toanswer it. ‘All right – I’m coming,’ he called out as the hammering increased.
