Murray has not played since his Wimbledon quarter-final defeat by Sam Querrey but is scheduled to play either Ryan Harrison or Leonardo Mayer after receiving a first-round bye in Australia.
'I want to enjoy playing again,' Murray said at a press conference. 'I've really missed it.
'I don't mind if it's 30 in the world level. I would love it to be No 1, but I just want to play.'
Murray lost a one-set exhibition match against Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 earlier this week and video of him practicing showed unconvincing movement around the court.
But the Scot said the match with Bautista Agut served him well.
'I felt better as it went on,' Murray said. 'Obviously a little slow at the start and Roberto is one of the best players in the world.
'When you haven't competed for a while, it takes time to get up to that pace.
'I started to feel a bit better towards the end but I need to keep improving for sure.'
