Dark and Light Development Update - 5/11/2017
Hey everyone - Dark and Light associate producer Horsejoke here! We’ve been a little quiet recently, so let’s shed some light on what’s going on behind the scenes in Snail’s offices. To quickly summarize, development on Dark and Light is progressing at a great pace, and we’re well on-track for an Early Access release later this year.

Here’s an overview of just a few of the pre-launch polishing and upgrades that we’ve been working on in the past few months:
Models, Textures, and A***tions:
We’re really happy with the work we’ve put into Dark and Light’s visuals, especially when it comes to the world. However, a few character, NPC, and some creature models are a bit older than others, and it shows. We’re in the process of completely remastering a number of models to ensure that there’s a consistently high level of quality throughout the game. Check out some comparisons below of models that we’ve already finished up.



A few months ago, MMORPGcom and IGN released a few gameplay videos of a very early playtest of Dark and Light. We received some criticism on quality of the character a***tions, which you’ll obviously be seeing a lot of in a third-person game. As a result, we’re putting some extra effort into smoothing out character a***tions. This is a big undertaking, and we aren’t quite ready to show off our results just yet, but know that we’ve heard your feedback and we’re working to improve on it.
World Design:
One of the pitfalls associated with creating massive open worlds (and something extremely frustrating for players) is a focus on scale over accessibility. Early playtesting resulted in the discovery of a few issues, such as both players and creatures getting stuck on rocks and trees, unintentionally difficult-to-navigate areas in the wilderness and inside cities, and more. One of our main goals now is to work on redesigning these problem areas to create a more coherent, visually-appealing, and enjoyable experience for our players (along with fewer trips to the player support page).


Camera:
In early playtesting, we discovered a number of issues inherent to third-person view - movement and aiming being two of the biggest culprits. We’ve since made some major adjustments to Dark and Light’s camera system, allowing for a wider FOV, easier ranged weapon targeting, and omnidirectional movement without needing to adjust the camera angle.


These are just a few very small samples of the work that we're doing to prep Dark and Light for its Early Accesslaunch. We’re still actively developing, optimizing, and rapidly iterating on Dark and Light, and we’ll be keeping you updated through regular features through Steam announcements, as well as on our Facebook, Twitter, and the official DnLwebsite[http://www.playdnl.com]. Look forward to seeing more of the game as we get closer to the Early Access launch later this year!

                Hey everyone, associate producer Horsejoke here again with another update on Dark and Light’s development. This time, we’re introducing a few unique creatures you’ll be encountering a little later on in your travels, so if you’d prefer to go in blind and discover everything that Dark and Light’s world has to offer on your own, then stop reading now, because spoilers ahead!
                Elementals(元素):

                Elemental magic is just one of the forms that magic can take in Dark and Light. Fire, Earth, Air, Water, Dark, and Light magic can be harnessed by players and used for destruction, healing, protection, and various other useful purposes. Elementals are physical embodiments of concentrated elemental magic; they’re powerful, aggressive, and teeming with magical energy. Newer explorers should steer clear if they happen across a wild one, but more experienced players can kill Elementals and harvest them for powerful magical cores. These cores can be used as crafting reagents for high-level items and spells, or, once enough cores have been collected, they can be used to summon a tamed Elemental of your very own.

                Wind Elemental(风元素):

                Wind Elementals are wispy, ethereal things - so much so, that they’re incredibly difficult to spot if you’re not actively searching for one. They can only be found in extremely high altitudes; you’ll most likely need a strong flying mount if you want to have any chance of even reaching them. Tamed Wind Elementals quietly maneuver about the battlefield, taking out your enemies with powerful gusts of wind.

                Fire Elemental(火元素):

                Can’t handle the heat? Then get the heck away from these guys. Fire Elementals emit such intense heat, they raise the temperature of the area around them to unbearable levels for ill-equipped adventurers. Tamed Fire Elementals can really turn up the heat on your enemies, dealing heavy damage with fire-infused attacks.

                Dark Elemental(暗元素):

                There’s nothing that says “pure evil” quite like the concentrated essence of pure darkness, and that’s exactly what Dark Elementals are. They’re quite a bit more formidable than other Elementals, so it’s a good idea to gather a party of experienced adventurers before deciding to hunt one down.

                Big Power Comes in Small Packages
                Full-sized Elementals aren’t the only things that manifest from the world’s excess of elemental magic.

                Imps are basically bite-sized Elementals; while they may not have quite as much combat strength as true Elementals, they can still put up a fight. However, Imps’ true strength is in their utility - based on their elemental alignment, tamed Imps can assist with important daily tasks. Fire Imps, for example, can function as mobile campfires, providing light, heat, and even cooking food while supporting players in combat!

                Elementals play a big role in Dark and Light’s unique ecosystem, and they’re a huge asset for players in both PvP and PvE due to their powerful combat abilities and unique utility they offer once tamed. We still have a few more Elementals and Imps to cover, so be sure to check back next week for part 2!

                    Dark and Light Development Update 5/26/2017 - Even More Elementals!5月27日- HORSEJOKEHey everyone, associate producer Horsejoke here with another update on Dark and Light’s development. This week we’re continuing our look at Dark and Light’s mystical, magical Elementals. As before, if you want to discover these creatures on your own, then head back now, because we’ve got a few more small spoilers today! If you happened to miss part 1, you can check it out here.
                    Stone Elemental:

                    That’s not a pile of rubble… well, it is, but it’s also a Stone Elemental! Unlike other Elementals, they’re not particularly attached to any single biome; they’re comfortable just about anywhere on land. They generally don’t bother with adventurers, but if you mistake them for a boulder and try to take a chunk off of them with a pickaxe, they won’t take it sitting down. If you’re looking to keep your base safe while you’re away, it’s a great idea to keep a group of Stone Elementals around.
                    Ice Elemental:

                    These guys are the polar opposite of the Fire Elementals we revealed last week. Found only in the most frigid regions of Dark and Light’s world, Ice Elementals will chill any nearby player to the bone, making it necessary to prepare some warmth magic and appropriate equipment before thinking about approaching them.
                    Light Elemental:

                    Standing strong in opposition to the forces of Darkness is the pure essence of order, the Light Elemental. Like Similar to Dark Elementals, Light Elementals are significantly more powerful than other types of Elementals. Also, just because they embody order, it doesn’t mean they’re any less likely to absolutely slaughter a group of adventurers that cross its path. If you happen to see a blinding light in the distance during an evening stroll, it may be best to stay away unless you’re ready for a tough fight.
                    Those are some of the full Elementals that you’ll encounter in Dark and Light, but this update isn’t over yet!
                    Water Imp

                    That’s not a mirage, it’s a Water Imp! Found near rivers or other bodies of water, Water Imps tend to blend in with their environment nearly perfectly, making them particularly hard to track down. Their skill in camouflage doesn’t mean they can’t protect themselves if they’re caught, though. Tamed Water Imps will help keep a thirsty adventurer hydrated on long journeys, as well as helping out in combat.
                    Ice Imp

                    Who would have thought that an avatar of elemental magic could be so cute? Like their matured Ice Elemental brothers, Ice Imps can only be found in extremely cold areas. They’re fairly aggressive in the wild, but tamed Ice Imps loyally follow their masters, lending a hand in combat and using their natural iciness to preserve food and various peri***le reagents while you’re exploring the world! This property makes keeping an Ice Imp around a major priority for any adventurer struck with wanderlust.
                    We can’t wait to see what players will accomplish with a whole team of Elementals at their side.
