The Orcas, a pod of about 7-10 animals swam fast forwards where we suddenly saw a Sperm Whale surfacing. And it was obvious, the Orcas were heading towards this whale. They swam right up to the Sperm Whale and started to harras him, while he started to take off. It didn’t take long and this animal was together with another Sperm Whale. The two whales almost touched each other with the bodies, clearly in defensive behaviour, breathing heavily and we heart lots of clicks from their sonar on our hydrophones. The Orcas disappeared for a while, suddenly we couldn’t see them anymore. The two Sperm Whales were swimming right next to our boat, doing nose-lifting to check the surface with their eyes. The animals seemed very stressed and then we saw the Orcas heading back towards the two Sperm Whales. It took a while until we realised that those Orcas were hunting a third Sperm Whale, which was swimming towards us to join the other two. As the Orcas aggressivly passed by one of the Sperm Whales did a rolling maenouvre right underneath our boat. All this happened about 3 meters next to our boat – the Sperm Whales dived without showing the fluke and the Orcas disappeared. We did not see the Orcas again. The Sperm Whales stayed at the surface for a long time, lifting their noses and doing shallow dives every now and then. About 20 minutes later we could watch one Sperm Whale doing a normal dive and the picture of the fluke showes injuries on both fluke tips.

About the same time, one of whales breached nearby – maybe the Minke Whale which had joined the spectacular scene all the time and we didn’t see again, or maybe it was one of the Sperm Whales.
Marta Acosta Plata, Sperm Whale researcher for Whalesafari since 4 years, couldn’t believe her eyes. “It is not usual that Orcas attack male Sperm Whales in a place like this. Usually Orcas would rather go for mother and calves but not attack in a feeding ground where ther are only males – this is incredibly extraordinairy what we have seen today!”.

我国海洋公园曾经拥有的唯一一条虎鲸Hoi Wai （Suzie Wong ）
Hoi Wai （Suzie Wong ）和大部分海洋公园虎鲸一样来自于冰岛，1997年4月21日死亡，可惜没有熬到香港回归。

在地中海发现的逆戟鲸亚科属种化石
于意大利东部马雷基亚河晚上新世沉积层发现了真海豚科新种---马雷基亚海豚(Arimidelphis sorbinii) , 它的化石包括不完整的头骨 , 右耳骨 , 下颌 , 牙齿及左前肢。由于Ariminus是拉丁文 , 正是指马雷基亚河 , 因此可以顺理成章的翻译作马雷基亚海豚。

马雷基亚海豚(Arimidelphis sorbinii)曾被误看作是奥氏宽吻海豚(Tursiops osennae) , 后来根据颌骨及吻突来看它和逆戟鲸属有不少相似性。马雷基亚海豚(Arimidelphis sorbinii)是体型细小的逆戟鲸亚科成员 , 有相对较短的吻突 , 颌骨每边有多达至少17颗牙齿。马雷基亚海豚(Arimidelphis sorbinii)头骨相对细小 , 颅基长度估计只有45厘米 , 它的耳外骨显示和半全豚属(Hemisyntrachelus)有极密切的关系 。马雷基亚海豚(Arimidelphis sorbinii)有强状但是相对较短的吻突 , 前上颌骨前部较宽 , 这些特征在 领航鲸亚科是很常见的 。马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)的吻突形状及大小都和爪头鲸及侏虎鲸的相似 , 但是和领航鲸属及瑞氏海豚属的明显不同 , 马雷基亚海豚(Arimidelphis sorbinii)吻突明显要较半全豚属(Hemisyntrachelus)的来得短。



马雷基亚海豚(Arimidelphis sorbinii)的下颌骨和逆戟鲸属及伪虎鲸属的相似 , 它的下颌和瑞氏海豚属 , 领航鲸属及侏虎鲸属的明显不同 , 至于半全豚属(Hemisyntrachelus)的下颌骨形态则介乎在马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)及宽吻海豚属之间。马雷基亚海豚 (Arimidelphis sorbinii)牙齿大小及数目都和宽吻海豚属的相似 , 却和逆戟鲸属及其它领航鲸亚科成员的大不相同 。马雷基亚海豚(Arimidelphis sorbinii)的牙齿直径维持在4 mm至7mm之间 , 牙齿长度则维持在17 mm至32mm , 最前端的牙齿直径可能仅只有2.5mm , 颌前端的牙齿长度可能只有10 mm 。


马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)肱部特征显示和宽吻海豚属 , 瑞氏海豚属 , 半全豚属 , 侏虎鲸属及爪头鲸属有明显的相似性 , 至于逆戟鲸属 , 伪虎鲸属 , 领航鲸属 , 真海豚属及原海豚属则有较短而粗状的肱部 , 这和马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)的肱部明显不同。


根据分析显示马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)和半全豚属 , 逆戟鲸属及伪虎鲸属同属一个进化支 , 马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)有较短的吻突及粗状的下颌显示马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)有着逆戟鲸属及伪虎鲸属的特征 , 马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)可能有着较强的咬力并能捕捉相对较大的猎物 。由于马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)有相对细长的舌骨 , 这显示马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)的进食方式和抽吸形式无关 , 马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)的进食方式恐怕类似鲨类的进食方式。今天的抹香鲸及喙鲸则有着较厚及宽阔的甲状舌骨及基舌骨就被认为是和抽吸 的进食方式有关 , 此外瑞氏海豚属 , 领航鲸属及伪虎鲸属下颌骨有较低的冠突 , 牙齿数目较少并认为和抽吸进食形式有一定关系。

马雷基亚海豚属(Arimidelphis)的发现显示真海豚科在上新世时期的地中海非常繁盛 , 于意大利也发现了雅士达海豚属(Astadelphis) , 半全豚属(Hemisyntrachelus) , 逆戟鲸属(Orcinus) , 宽吻海豚属(Tursiops) , 原海豚属(Stenella)及领航鲸属(Globicephala)的化石 。雅士达海豚属(Astadelphis)有相对狭窄的吻突及拉长的下颌联合 , 它和现存的糙齿海豚亚科(Stenoninae)关系较密切。朱利托斯卡纳海豚(Etruridelphis giulii)过去曾被划作原海豚属(Stenella) , 它的颅基长约358 mm , 体型要较现存的原海豚属种来得大。西托克逆戟鲸(Orcinus citoniensis)则是当地发现的史前逆戟鲸属种 , 体长仅只有4.5米 , 颌骨每边多达14颗牙齿。至于当地发现的奥氏宽吻海豚(Tursiops osennae)可能要划归他属。

此外在意大利中部也发现了数目众多的真海豚科耳外骨化石 , 这些化石属上新世时期 , 上新世真海豚科在地中海的多样性可能是“墨西拿盐度危机”（Messinian salinity crisis）带来的结果 , 晚中新世的灭绝灾难使一些原来生活于地中海一带的鲸类种群灭绝 , 真海豚科可能起源于大西洋并迅速填补真空 , 在地中海迅速孕育发展。
