      Best
      Best Memories
      “Melody!
Come here, I have big news.” I looked over my shoulder; Katy was jumping up and
down on the track. “What’s up?” I slid my backpack on the ground and stared at
her huge eyes. “I heard someone said Tina is saying mean things about you
behind your back.” Katy shrugged. “Oh, really.” I tried to find a way to
convert the subject, but nothing came to mind, all I could think of was the
fight I had with Tina the day before. ‘But we had fights before and nothing
happened. She’s too good a friend. She won’t do that, or did she?’ my mind
started to blow, doubts filled my head. ‘Think of something to say.’ My inner
self shouted at me, but my mouth sealed shut, all I can do is to manage an
awkward smile. After a long time of silent, I found Katy fixed her eyes on me,
raising her eyebrows waiting to see my reaction. “I…”I hesitated, my mind
functioned like rusted gears. “I believe in Tina, she won’t do that.” Words
burst out of my mouth. Katy gazed me for a few second, and then began to say
her opinion, but it was cut off by the loud class bell. After a brief goodbye,
I ran off, my face flushed, I know I could not bear Katy’s questioning and I
mentally tried my hardest to block out the other possibilities.
During the whole class period, I
stared blankly at the board, as the teacher furiously wrote notes on the board, but
barely paying any attention. The fight I had with Tina flashed through my mind
like a movie and then Katy’s voice echoed in my mind. I looked around the room
and peered at Tina’s back. As usual she was tapping her pen on the table and
using one hand to support her head. Then our tacit understanding came along,
she turned her head and we exchanged secret smiles, the way we laughed when we
thought of something that reminded us of a funny memory. I sighed in relief and sank in to the chair. Of
course I should believe in Tina, because I knew deep in my heart, even if everyone
are lying to me, she won’t.
      Sunshine
      shot through the window, filling the classroom with warmth. But shouting and laughter left the classroom;
instead a gloomy cloud covered the room. Words spread from mouth to mouth. “Did
you hear that? Tina…” “Yeah, I know, I heard she cheated…” Rumors grew bigger
and wilder. Tina sat in her chair not saying a word, keeping her head in the
homework. I padded her on the shoulder, as she looked up, the joyfulness left
her smile, leaving a blank sympathetic twitch. “I…”I watched her closely,
sorting the words in my head, “You want to go out and grab a drink?” I
shrugged, and blaming myself for this meaningless suggestion. She nodded, and
      closed her textbook.
      On
the way to the student store, neither of us said a word. We sank in a bench
nearby, after I took a sip of my soda, I straightened my thoughts. “You know,”
I looked at her carefully, examining every detail of her face expression. “I
always believe you, you know that. So don not keep secrets from me, I want to
know what is going on.” I swallowed the last part of the sentence back. Tina
stared at me for a second, tears escaped from her eye, running down her cheeks
and soaked on her t shirt. She used the back of her hand to wipe the tears off,
but the tears starts to pour down. “The truth is…” Tina confessed, looked down
at her shoes and choked with tears, “You know Serina from the other class? Last
time I won the writing competition and she lost. I guess then she tried to use
her skills to create rumors about me…” Tina sank deeper in the chair as if she
wanted to slide in a hole nearby to hide herself from the reality. I put an arm
around her, pulling us closer. We put our heads together glazing at each other.
The sun shined in our eyes, healing the heart wounds slowing. We looked at each
other again and chuckled. “That was like something in the drama.” Tina laughed
and smoothed her messed up hair. We both shrugged, and almost at the same time,
we both said out loud “You are my best friend ever.”
      After
a few days, No one brought up the rumor again, and people found out the rumors
were not true. On the way home, Katy, Tina and I laughed and gossiped as
always, chasing each other and making fun of the weird clothes in the window of
the street shops. I laughed at myself for doubting Tina at the beginning and
creating those intensions for myself. But I also realized that Friendship creates
the best memories. We should enjoy every second we have together. And most
importantly, Trust is the strongest glue that will stick friendships together.
