I am writing in regards to an issue we are having with some of our products that have been manufactured by your company.
Though we do request the plating metals and base metals to be specific to our designs, we need to make sure that our quality control standards are being met in this area.
We are receiving complaints that rings, bracelets, earrings, and necklaces are tarnishing rapidly and/or turning skin green or grey in color. We know that this happens based on the presence of certain alloy metals that certain people’s skin reacts to, but I would like to hear from you, our vendor, what you think we could do to prevent this from happening?
Perhaps plating thickness is not up to the standard it should be. We require
Plating "standard thickness" for ALL costume jewelry will be 4 mills, this is equal to .1 micron.
Mil = a thousand of a Inch , Micron = micrometer, a thousandth of a millimeter, a millionth of a meter.
Conversion:
microns x 0.0394= milsmils x 25.4= microns
Also, If an item is plated in brass ox, it should have a thick enough layer of lacquer so that there is a barrier between the raw brass and the skin.
Please help us with any thoughts for improving this problem or solutions you may have for it. Also please inform us of any other reason you may think this occurrence happens so often.
We may have to change our quality control standards.
I look forward to your response, and thank you for your time!
