The mineral cooperation agreement has not yet been signed. Today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sparred with the MAGA camp in the Oval Office.
★
Zelensky believes that President Trump's plan does not guarantee that Putin will never start a war again in the future, and he has brought some photos of the atrocities of Russian troops to convince the US authorities to increase military aid to Ukraine.
★
However, this behavior is still only to criticize Putin and Russia from the moral high ground, hoping that President Trump and his team will sympathize with Ukraine's suffering and then punish Russia with force. For the United States, this is not a good way to solve the problem.
★
Perhaps the mineral cooperation agreement and the armistice negotiations will only restrain the Russians for a few years, and they do not know when they may start a war again. Russia's attitude toward Ukraine is clearly contemptuous, and Zelensky emphasized again at the White House that Russia, driven by arrogance, always wants to completely destroy Ukraine.
★
Zelensky wanted to persuade the United States to help Ukraine defeat Russia for good, with a surrender rather than a limited truce. But the United States, as a third party, cannot do that anyway. To defeat Russia, it can only be done when Ukraine itself is strong enough, and now Ukraine is weak enough to hang on to its life.
★
Ukraine is in no position to ask the United States to help them achieve that wish, and the United States can only offer a sufficiently balanced compromise. The strength of a country depends on its own efforts, and cannot always live on the aid of Allies under the guise of "justice." Although Ukraine has suffered humiliation and brutality, it is ultimately the result of its own inactivity and corruption. Had Ukraine long ago had a clean political system, a mature business environment, and no secret dealings with the cabal of countries around the world, instead focusing on building up its power and military, Putin would never have said anything offensive, much less invaded it.
★
Therefore, instead of asking the United States to help Ukraine defeat Russia, Zelensky should accept President Trump's proposal and take the time to carry out internal reforms in the country after the armistice. Putting Ukraine on the right track and maintaining its development and strength forever is the right way to stop the war for good.
