Dee, known in Chinese as Di Renjie, is a character based on a magistrate-cum-investigator who became famous in the 7th century during the Tang Dynasty. He then took on a second life when his cases were fictionalised in a Chinese detective novel published in the 18th century. In 1949, an English translation followed. Robert van Gulik, a Dutch diplomat who spent much of his life in Asia, undertook the task, becoming so entranced by it that he went on to write Detective Dee mysteries of his own.
狄，中文全名为狄仁杰，是公元七世纪唐朝的一个地方检察官。他的一生第一次被写在中国侦探小说中可以追溯到１８世纪。在１９４９年，一个在中国常驻的荷兰外交官罗伯特   古里克将他的故事翻译成了英文。他对狄仁杰的故事非常着迷，以至于他竟然开始自己创作狄仁杰的故事！


这部电影是今年威尼斯电影节的参赛作品，是一部大陆香港合作的作品，由越南出生的香港导演徐克执导。徐克是１９８０年代香港荧屏的领军人物，他是一个非常具有创业精神的电影制片人，更是一个全才。这部电影从一开始就与好莱坞的作品不同。他的电影风格非常激情洋溢，情节紧凑让人欲罢不能。一个老套的侦探故事让他变得更有吸引力并且另类。


显然，狄仁杰在电影中的形象比小说中更加有魅力。刘德华主演的狄仁杰是一位身材苗条，身手敏捷，且可以与武则天最信任的贴身侍女上官静儿谈笑风生的人物。上官静儿由李冰冰饰演，武艺高强绝不亚于狄仁杰。

The word "cryptic" sums up most of the characters but their reluctance to voice their thoughts is not a sign that they don't have any. The Empress (Carina Lau) is a compelling portrait of ruthless ambition tempered by fleeting signs of some kinder impulse lurking below. Detective Dee, too, gives nothing away until the moment is precisely right. And he has an albino assistant (Deng Chau), who regards everybody with such suspicion that you're never sure whose side he's on.
“神秘”这个词可以用在总结这部电影里的所有人物。他们不说出他们的想法，并不代表他们没有自己的想法。武则天的冷酷无情及野心，形象生动，却偶尔也会显露出深埋在心底的小小冲动与感情。狄仁杰也是直到最后，关键时刻才讲出他的心声。他的白化病助手，由邓超饰演。是一个对所有人都有疑心，让人摸不透到底他是站在哪一边的人。


尽管这部戏的投资相对于好莱坞的手笔略显微薄，但是这部电影看起来还是非常精彩的，特别是它的CGI技术。你不需要相信你所看到的一切景象，你只需要去欣赏它独特的魅力和创造力。
