“Natie!” Serena squealed, peering out the window at Nate. “What are you doing here?!” Serena couldn’t believe Nate was right in front of her. She’d hardly thought about him this past year. She knew she should still be mad at Nate after what happened last winter, but it all seemed so far in the past. Besides, she could afford to be generous. If Nate hadn’t made her so miserable last year, she’d never have reached out to Dan. So in a way, she owed her current happiness to him.
“We totally have room!” Serena announced, getting out of the car. Nate looked so cute and helpless, with snowflakes sitting in his dirty blond hair. She threw her arms around Nate in an affectionate old-friends hug. “Hop in,” she told him, getting in the backseat with Jenny.
Dan sputtered, his blue fleece–gloved hands gripping the steering wheel. He didn’t love the idea of Jenny talking to this douche, and he really didn’t like the familiar way Serena had hugged him. And now he had to give the guy a ride?
“Hey, I really appreciate the ride, especially with this snow. I’ll take middle,” Nate offered, climbing over Serena and wedging his lanky frame into the middle of the seat between her and Jenny.
Serena squeezed his shoulder. “Let’s go,” she said.
Dan glared mutinously toward the backseat. Why didn’t Serena offer to sit up front with him? What was he? Their fuсking chauffeur?
“Great. Let’s go,” Dan growled, navigating out of his spot and slowly driving down Thayer Street toward I-95.
“Dan, aren’t you going to ask me about RISD?” Jenny needled in her little-sister voice.
“How was it?” Serena asked curiously.
“So good,” Jenny gushed. “And guess what? Nate’s going to Brown!”
“You are, Natie? Oh my God, that’s awesome!” Serena cried. “Wait, we need something to celebrate. Dan, can you stop for snacks?”
Dan grunted. The last thing he wanted was for them to eat a fuсking cake in the backseat of his car while he drove them around like a fuсking soccer team. “I think we should just try to get home as quickly as possible. The snow’s really coming down,” he pointed out.
“Whatever you say.” Nate shrugged. “I’m still not used to being back on the East Coast. We don’t get snow at Deep Springs.”
“Did you know that Nate knows how to birth cows?” Serena said proudly as Dan merged into the bumper-to-bumper traffic of I-95 South. The cars were jockeying for road space, and the steadily falling snowflakes made for poor visibility. Dan sucked in his breath. He hated driving. Part of the reason he loved living in New York was that he never had to drive.
“I need to concentrate,” he muttered, turning on the windshield wipers.
Nate tapped Dan’s shoulder. “You want me to drive? I’m pretty good at dealing with the dust storms in California.”
“No,” Dan said shortly. He looked in the rearview mirror. Jenny was leaning toward the middle section of the seat, practically on top of Nate. She was a smart girl, but when it came to boys, she could be sort of a ditz. Dan knew his sister, and right now Jenny was in full-on flirt mode.

Serena scampered up the snowy hill, pulling a handmade toboggan behind her. “Natie, let’s race!” she called, her breath coming out in small white puffs. The floodlights outside the house were on, casting the property in an eerie glow.
“Okay.” Nate ran after Serena. It struck him that they were twenty—actual adults—and yet all they wanted to do was act like little kids. It was like that dumb cliché: The more you change, the more you stay the same. Maybe growing up was just about becoming closer to the person you always were.
“Hey!” Nate easily caught up with Serena, wrapping his arms around her willowy, athletic frame.
Serena whirled around to face him, her blond hair whipping his face. She playfully pushed Nate so he took a lurching step backward into a snowbank.
“No mercy!” Nate yelled, pulling her down with him and wrestling her into the snow.
Serena squealed in protest as she wriggled free, making an impromptu snow angel. Clumps of snow clung to her long eyelashes.
For a second, Nate was transported back to their sophomore year, to an afternoon when they’d been goofing off in the piles of snow in his courtyard. It was the first time he’d seen Serena not as plain old Serena, his best friend since kindergarten, but as a beautiful girl. A girl he loved.
He hastily stood up, brushing the wet snow off the back of his khakis.
“Here,” he offered, holding his hand out to help Serena up.
“Thanks.” Serena got to her feet, still holding Nate’s hand. She held his gaze. The air felt thick and the world around them seemed muted.
“Nate, can you help me?” Jenny called from the bottom of the hill. They both looked up to where she was sitting on top of a toboggan, her cheeks rosy from the cold.
“Sure,” Nate said, reluctantly turning away from Serena.
“Watch out, he’s brutal!” Serena called after them, trying not to feel disappointed. When Dan had refused to come sledding, it was almost a relief. Playing in the snow had always been something she and Nate shared.
Nate grabbed the sled and tossed it halfway up the hill. He caught it and ran the last of the way, Jenny laughing and trudging behind. They both climbed on and he wrapped his arms around her small frame. “Let’s go!” he cried, pushing them toward the edge of the slope.
As they hurtled down the hill across the crisp fresh snow, Jenny felt the sting of the wind against her face. This was nothing like traying at Waverly, where everyone used the dining hall trays to slide down the teeny-tiny hill behind Dumbarton, one of the girls’ dorms. Toboggans were so much more authentic and quaint. She felt like one of the sisters in Little Women. They were always going sledding with their neighbor Laurie, who was too cute for his own good.
Sort of like a certain green-eyed Adonis we all know and love?
The sled coasted to a stop at the foot of the hill. Jenny breathed out in wonderment. Fat snowflakes circled furiously around them, and the majestic pine trees were coated in white. She felt like she was trapped in a snow globe.

                回复
Serena sat on the center of her bed in her childhood bedroom, hugging her knees to her chest. She hadn’t moved since coming home from her coffee date turned breakup with Dan. It was too exhausting to figure out what to do with herself. She wanted to cry, to release all the confused feelings inside her, but she couldn’t.
She glanced from the white molding on the ceiling to the framed Breakfast at Fred’s poster over her antique bureau to the tiny silver Tiffany box on her night table. The box housed all her baby teeth. In high school, Nate loved shaking them out onto her white eyelet pillowcase, counting the teeth, and marveling at how tiny they were.
Serena sighed. Dan had noticed the tiny box, but only to note that it was pretty. He’d never asked what was in it. It was sort of like their relationship—on the surface it seemed perfect, but they were both too afraid to really look at what was inside.
In a way, their breakup had felt inevitable. When she was at Yale and he was at Columbia, they’d make plans for the next weekend or next break, but they’d never talked about the future. And Serena never really wanted to move to Iowa. It was just that she had no idea what she wanted to do.
Her eyes fell on the travel scrapbook Fiona had given her, sitting on her bureau. She crossed the room and picked it up, flopping back down on her bed. A familiar hum began to course through her body.
                  Wanderlust?
Serena stared out the window. A snow flurry had begun, swirling feathery white flakes down Fifth Avenue and onto the treeless expanse of park across from her bedroom. It was such a wonderfully familiar old view, one that she’d cherish forever. But she could leave and it would still be there when she got back. Serena’s heart beat excitedly. A small smile formed on her lips. For the first time in a long time, she knew exactly what she wanted to do.
And who she wants to do it with?
Just then, Serena’s phone buzzed, skittering across the marble edge of the hot tub. She grabbed it with her wet hand.
                  WAITING OUTSIDE. YOU HERE?—NATE
Serena grinned as she pulled her hair up into a high wet ponytail at the nape of her neck. She searched around the edge of the hot tub for her dress. It seemed like fate. After all, why travel the world alone when she could ask Nate to come with her?
“Who was that?” Blair asked, glancing up at Serena.
“I have to go,” Serena said, sliding one slippery foot into a strappy Christian Louboutin sandal. “I’ll be right back,” she fibbed, climbing out of the hot tub, slipping on her dress, and disappearing into the crowd.
Blair stared at her friend’s retreating back. Her phone buzzed.
                  WAITING OUTSIDE. YOU HERE?—NATE
Blair blinked at the message. What the fuсk? Had Serena gotten the exact same message? She pulled herself out of the hot tub, threw on her dress, even though it was silk and would stain, and raced out of the party.
And who says all the drama happens at midnight?
Nate glanced up at the towering Tribeca Star Hotel, his hands jammed in his pockets, unsure whether or not to go in. Part of him wanted to find Anthony or Charlie or any of the old St. Jude’s guys, fire up a gigantic bong, and flirt with as many hot girls as he could, just to prove that he still had it in him. The other part of him wanted to go back to his parents’ town house and sit in the living room and eat Jell-O pudding cups. How was it that he’d sailed the world, learned how to milk cows, debated the arguments of all the Greek philosophers, and majored in American studies at an Ivy League university—but was still as confused as ever?

                    “Serena!”Nate
                    “Blair!”Nate
Blair”
