Confirmed, Chace Crawford Backs Out of 'Footloose'

"Footloose" has once again lost its leading man. More than a year after he took over the role of Ren McCormack from "High School Musical" star Zac Efron, Chace Crawford cut loose from the remake project. Confirming the news to Entertainment Weekly (EW) was the representative for the "Gossip Girl" heartthrob.
Although it is still unclear what was really behind the 24-year-old's exit, EW reported that one source has blamed it on the shooting schedule of The CW's teen drama series. According to sources, Paramount Pictures is likely to go with an unknown with a possible launch of a nationwide search for the role.
While Chace's reason for quitting might be related to schedule conflict, Zac's was something completely different. Back in early 2009, it was reported that the "17 Again" star has chosen to dropped out from "Footloose" in his effort to break away from typecasting. The young actor reportedly told the studio he didn't want to do another musical at this point in his career.
A remake to the 1984 film of the same name, "Footloose" revolves around a city kid who moves to a conservative town where his love of rock music disrupts the school and sends the local preacher on a mission to shut him down. "Dancing with the Stars" two-time champion Julianne Hough is still attached to play Ren's love interest. Production is still expected to start in summer.
