绝大部分俯冲板片都是以一定的正角度下插到周边较热的地幔中,平板俯冲则是例外,在沉入地幔之前,它能在上覆板块之下近水平地运动数百乃至上千公里(Manea et al., 2017)。作为一种非同寻常的俯冲模式,平板俯冲仅占现今全球俯冲带的 10% 左右,主要分布于中墨西哥、秘鲁和智利(Gutscher et al., 2000 ; Manea et al.,2017)。平板俯冲的形成机制长期处于争论之中,一般认为是俯冲板块自身的浮力异常(如大洋高原、无震洋脊或海山链)、海沟后撤、俯冲板块与上覆板块之间的吸力或上覆板块向海沟的运动等因素的组合效应(Manea et al., 2017)。
