To me, the answer is because it is a nickname that references a story he strongly identified with, To Kill a Mockingbird.
But it's just a suspicion on my part. But if you read the quote about 'mockingbirds' and are familiar with the story the comparisons are eerie.

Oh and about Michael being in every name--I agree that's pretty egotistical but George Foreman named all his kids George. (actually I just read it was only his 5 boys now, I had thought the girls were also named George) So there is a precedent.
