I prefer not to name the celebratedplaywright who lunched with Ruth and Spencer and me in Paris one afternoon atMaxim’s.
He had been very anxious to meetSpencer, who was honored to meet him, and the luncheon was a success from theoutset.
Dawdling over coffee, reluctant toend the occasion, we continued our conversation.
“I’d love to see you in a play withKatharine Hepburn,” said the celebrated playwright. “It would make history.”
“It would if the play was any good,” saidSpencer. “And the parts.”
“Of course,” said the celebratedplaywright, “that goes without saying. I’m damned if I’m not going to try putsomething together.”
“Very Flattering,” said Spencer.
“Not at all.” Said the celebratedplaywright, “Not at all.”
It was almost impossible to see hiscreative juices beginning to flow. His fingertips tapped the table and he lit acigarette although he had a fresh one burning in the ashtray. His eyes dartedabout like minnows in a pool.
“I can see it,” he said. ”I mean, feel it. The sort of relationship it should be. And I’d want to tailor it verycarefully. The acting, the big acting, would have to be in your part, ofcourse. But use everything possible out of that delicious personality of hers,so that…..”
Spencer frowned as he interrupted.“What do you mean? I’m not sure I follow.”
Ruth looked worried.
Ruth
“Well,” said the celebratedplaywright, “we all know that Kate is a tremendous personality but not whatyou’d call a real actress.”
“Not what who’d call a realactress?” said Spencer in tones that vibrated the china and cutlery on ourtable and reverberated through the mirrored room.
The celebrated playwright was awarehe had blundered.
“What I mean… mean to say,” hebegan.
“I know what you mean to say, youstupid bastard,” said Spencer. ”I heard you. I understand English pretty goddamwell. I’ve been studying it for years, and anybody who says… Where the hell doyou come off calling her Kate? You don’t even know her.”
“No, but…”
“What in Christ’s name does anactress have to do before she gets the big final Okay from you superciliouspipsqueaks? She’s only worked and studied and practiced and knocked herself outfor thirty years and improved all the time – and she was pretty goddam goodwhen she started – and taken chances, and challenges. Did you see her asCleopatra or in the O’Neill? The Merchantof Venice? The Taming ofthe Shrew? The Millionairess? What about The African Queen or Asyou like it? ThePhiladelphia Story? She was a greatactress in Morning Glory and that was 1933, God damn it! Look –don’t talk to me about acting. Talking to me about plays and playwriting or,what was that you called it? Dramaturgy? Yeah, talk to me about that. Or abouthistory or about geography. But don’t talk to me about acting. I know aboutacting and ‘ve acted with this girl – a lot – and if she isn’t a real actress, then there never was a real actress. Thanks for the lunch. It was delicious.I’m going home now to throw it up.”
He was gone.
It took the celebrated playwrighttwo double brandies to calm his nerves.
“Good Lord,” he said, “What abetise! I seem to have touched his sensitive spot.”
“You’re lucky he didn’t touch yoursensitive spot,” I said.
“I didn’t mean anythingdisrespectful, ” he said. “You know that. There are simply different styles ofacting. What I think about her would be true about Sarah Bernhardt, I suppose,or Ellen Terry. Mrs. Pat.”
我对她的看法和我对莎拉·伯恩哈特(译注:19世纪末20世纪初很著名的法国演员)、EllenTerry(译注:19世纪末20世纪初英国舞台剧演员,莎翁剧演员)以及Pat夫人一样。“
“Laurette Taylor?” Ruth suggested.
“No, ” he said. “Not LauretteTaylor. She was the other kind. A great actress who invented a personality ofevery aspect.”
“Well, anyway, you can take comfortin one thing.” She said.
“What’s that?” he asked.
“You don’t have to bother writingthat play for Tracy and Hepburn.”
“No, ” he said, “no, I don’t.” andordered still another double brandy.

Antonyand Cleopatra
(3) TheMerchant of Venice
(4) TheTaming of the Shrew
(6)The African Queen 1951
(7)As you like it
(8)The Philadelphia Story
(9)Morning Glory
(3)and ifshe isn’t a real actress, then there never was a real actress,

In the summer of 1954, Ruth and I were living in theSouth of France at St. Jean-Cap Ferrat. There had been talk that Kate andSpence would join us there for a time.
One morning, she phones and explains that it isimpossible for her to come, but asks us to urge Spencer to do so. She has to goto Hartford and will come along later. She lets us in on a secret. She has tohave an operation-minor, but still…She prefers Spencer far away to spare himany strain.
We follow her instructions, Ten days later, we meetthe U.S. Constitution at Cannes and drive Spencer to our rented villa.
Les Rochers is run-down, but in its day must have beengrand. It was built by Paris Singer for Isadora Duncan who, as a result of anill-time quarrel, never lived in it. Spencer thinks it a riot; not only theplace itself, but the fact that we should be occupying it. Half an hour afterhis arrival, we are all swimming about in the bay in front of the house. It isa perfect day. Spencer is doing his spouting-whale act.
Les Rochers
Ruth, floating (figuratively and literally), says,“oh, Spence, isn’t this wonderful?”
Spence, on his back, spouts and says, “Yup, And it’sno more than what we deserve.”
Our Somnolent life goes on happily for a week, Spencerrising at five every morning to watch the sun come up and the fishing boats goout; reading, napping, resting, going to Mass every morning. Ruth and I are atwork. We all meet each day for the first time at lunch. Spencer reads and readsand reads. We walk and explore.
He is on the phone daily with Kate. Secrets cannot bekept from so sensitive a man. He discovers what is happening. It throws himinto a controlled panic and I do not think he takes it kindly that we have kepta secret from him. Still, he understandings the problems of divided loyalty.
As though some dramatic complication were needed, inthe seventh or eighth reel, a general strike hits the area. There is no phoneservice, no telegraph. The rail-roads stop. There is no mail, incoming oroutgoing. It is, in sum, nothing less than the terrifying paralysis of ageneral strike. Spencer goes to pieces. I offer to drive him to Italy to make aphone call and perhaps stay there. We pile into the car, all three, and drivethe crowded roads across the border. We check into an Italian hotel, but thephones there are overloaded because of the French crisis and we cannot get acall through to Hartford. We try everything: bribery, corruption, rankingpulling. Nothing works. I suggest we stay the night and keep trying thefollowing day. Spencer reveals that he does not feel well. We get him home andsend for a doctor. An ugly and painful rush has developed around Spencer’smiddle. The doctor diagnoses it incorrectly as une piqure de meduse, or jellyfish sting.
“Very common, ” he says,“in this season. Be more prudent inthe water.”
He leaves a salve. It is utterly ineffective. Thecondition worsens. Spencer is in severe pain. In the middle of the night I goand find another doctor. This one correctly identifies the ailment as un zona-shingles. There is nothing to do,he says, but the deaden the pain narcotically and wait for it to run itscourse.
Downstairs, he asks, “M’sieu Spansaire(译注:不确定是不是指屈赛先生), he is in someemotional strain?”
“Yes.”
“Ah, well, when it goes, the zona will go.”
The next day, with the help of an influential friend,we are permitted to put through an overseas call. Before doing so, however, theoperator asks us to verify that it is “Urgent, Tres urgent.”
We assure her it is matter of life and death.
The call comes through. Kate insists she is fine, thatall is going well. Spence says nothing of his difficulty and they chant gailyfor half an hour.
Five minutes later, the agitated chief operator is onthe phone accusing me of fraud and corruption and treason. The call, sheinsist, was “pas urgent,” not at all urgent. She accuses me of defrauding thecountry, betraying the strikers, of being a filthy, no-good Amerloque(译注:法语,美国佬) and assures me of a sentence tothe guillotine, or perhaps she said that that was what should happen to me.
Later in the day, Spence wants to phone again. I tellhim the story of the outraged operator. He insists I try again. For fortunately,I get another operator; but unfortunately, she has been briefed by the firstone. Ruth helps. Spencer talks. At length, the new operator is cajoled andbullied into putting the call through. Waiting for it, we coach Spencer to makeit-please-sound urgent, and not to talk for half an hour. The call comesthrough within two minutes. Reassured as to Kate’s condition, he begins to tellher about the telephone situation, laughing, and making her laugh. All at once,he is cut off.
We try to re-establish the connection but this timethe operator refuses to speak to us.
The next day, Spencer flies from Nice to London and afew days later, Kate joins him there.
