EXT. Amazon river - daybreak
Chyron: THE AMAZON: Carecuru River Outpost
The Amazon rainforest. The mighty river steadily flows through it.
Tulio(v.o.)
(into recorder)
Amazon expedition,day 7.
2000 miles from Rio, we've reached the center of the rainforest.
Exotic JUNGLE SOUNDS echo near and far. Towering, thick trees create an enormous green canopy blocking much of the sky. It’s a world made for adventure
Tulio(v.o.)
We are surrounded by plants and animals struggling for survival...
We drop down through the canopy to find a small boat. Linda paddles in the front. Tulio sits in the rear. A large bird cage is in the middle of the boat. Tulio WHISPERS DRAMATICALLY into a type recorder.
Tulio
As we glide effortlessly down the river--
Linda rolls her eyes as she paddles.
Linda
(under her breath)
Effortless for you--
A beautiful BUTTERFLY flutters by.
Linda(cont'd)
How pretty!
Suddenly a LARGE FISH leaps out of the water, chomping it. Linda YELPS and flinches.
Linda(cont'd)
Oh, spit it out! Spit it out! Oooh.
Linda paddles on, bringing the boat into shore.
Tulio
We are near the nesting grounds of the Amazonian Wood Quail , Odontophorus gujanensis. Six months ago, we rescued this little bird from smugglers. It was sick, malnourished, with a broken leg. But now,my trusty assistant...
Linda shoots Tulio a look.
Tulio(cont'd)
(into recorder)
I mean, loving wife and colleague... will release her back to her natural habitat.
They've reached the bank. Linda opens the cage and the AMAZONIAN WOOD QUAIL, just stands there shaking a little.
Linda
It's okay. You can go now. Just like this.
Linda mimics flying out of the cage.
Tulio
Let me talk to her.
(cooing bird sounds)
Hooo-hoo! Hooo-hoo!
Linda
Go on.
The little bird steps out tentatively and gives a few SQUAWKS. The subtitle reads "Freaks."
Linda(cond't)
Do you think she's gonna be all right?
Tulio
Give it some time.
