BHOPAL: A 23-year-old school teacher was killed by a tiger in a village near Pench Tiger Reserve of Seoni district in Madhya Pradesh.
Manoj Dhurve was reportedly attacked by the tiger on Tuesday evening and his half-eaten body was later recovered from the thick forests.
Dhurve owns a small farm close to Mudiareeth village adjacent to the Khawasa buffer zone of Pench reserve. He also works as a guest teacher at a primary school in the same village. Around 11am he went in the forest area to collect mushrooms.
When he did not return till late, villagers started searching for him. At 8.30pm his slippers were recovered. Pug marks and evidence of dragging led villagers to his body.
Tiger had eaten much of it. Only face and legs were left intact, said sources. Matter was informed to officials of Khawasa range, who reached the spot and initiated search for tiger.
Villagers fear many tigers have moved out of the protected area following growth in their population and they are targeting humans and domestic animals. Officials assured villagers that the tiger would be rescued and shifted to a safe location away from the population.
They also said that financial assistance would be provided to the dependent family members after investigating into reasons behind his death. Rescue operation was hampered due to insistent rain in the region.
Noteworthy that death of a school teacher following tiger attack in Khitoli area of Bandhavgarh National Park in Katni district in 2014, had triggered violent protests from villagers who went on a rampage setting the forest range office and nine houses ablaze. The mob also attacked forest personnel, including local forest range officer while keeping some of them hostage, besides policemen and local journalists. Two motorized vessels and a dozen vehicles owned by the department were also set on fire, said officials.
