Infants like phantoms, denied andsuspected,

their existence discovered always whenleast expected.

Prepared for the day, the knight,

he just cannot keep the perfect mask in itsplace,

when he is falling asleep.

Faces slacken in slumber, each rigid musclerelaxes,
一旦睡着，僵硬的肌肉就会放松下来
without warning the hidden child comes tothe surface.
而那隐藏着的孩子便趁机来到世上
From the deepest darkness,
从那无尽的黑暗
some unnameable place, of the towerinverted,
从那倒悬的高塔，那无法言说的地方
forms a different face;
诞生了新的脸庞
climbing upwards with effort,
他奋力向上攀爬
to see through the eyes...
那双眼睛...那心灵的窗户
- windows to the soul -now shut- arestarring inside.
——虽然还紧紧闭着，却凝视着一切
And while the outside beholder sees theface of a child,
当外面的人看到孩子的脸
this fearful and helpless infant turns to awild beast inside:
那怯生生的婴儿成了一头野兽
becomes the architect of the most terrible dreams
成为了最恐怖的梦魇
and puts a cruel fears of death into ourhero's sleep...
向我们那位沉睡的英雄投下了死亡的恐惧...
This child is a dragon, who you must striveto kill,
这个孩子是头龙，你必须杀掉他
though it defeated you once
即使它曾经打败了你
... and, yes, it always will!
...即使你永远是他的手下败将！
Oh, little velveteen knight
噢，小小的天鹅绒骑士
(and heroes of all kinds),

endeavour to slay the dragon.

(... and yourselves when you try! )

Yes, this monster's immortal

... and your fight is in vain,

some monsters just cannot be slain.

This infant's beast...and the dragon's itsguardian,
那婴儿的野兽...和龙的守护者
protecting his child, so that no-one canharm it,
保护着他的孩子不受任何伤害
their most gruesome shape puts the fear ofdeath
他们那骇人的面容向我们的英雄
into our supposed (but velveteen) hero;
投下了死亡的恐惧
