Chapter 5
The Doctor had not been back in the Clock Tower for more than a fewminutes when there was a hammering on the door.
当门外传来猛烈的敲击声之时，博士才刚刚回到钟楼没几分钟。
‘Here forcenturies, and not a moment’s peace and quiet,’ he muttered as he went toanswer it. ‘All right – I’m coming,’ he called out as the hammering increased.
“这几个世纪以来，这里已经很久没有片刻的安宁了”他一边嘟囔着一边走过去开门， “好的，没事—我来了！”伴随着敲击声的加速，他喊了出来。
On the wooden step outside was a bedraggled boy in a cap that was toolarge for his head and pulled down low over his eyes. Snow was piled up on topof the cap. The overall effect was rather comical, but the Doctor knew fromexperience that it was not tactful to laugh out loud. Instead he
allowed himself a smile.
在木制台阶上站立着一个全身泥污的小男孩，他头戴一顶巨大的帽子，帽子是如此的大以至于盖过了他的头顶压到了他的眼睛之上。雪落满了帽子的顶端。从整体上来说，小男孩的着装看起来相当滑稽，但是博士早已经从经验中吸取了教训，他知道现在大笑是不明智的，所以他选择了微笑。

‘Symon, isn’tit?’ the Doctor said. He lifted the boy’s cap off his head, shook the snow offand returned it to its cranial position. ‘What can I do for you? Broken yourRill puppet again, have you?’
“symon，是吗？”博士问道，他将男孩头上的帽子拿了下来，抖落了上面的积雪，又将它放回了男孩的头上“我能为你做些什么？你又把你的小木偶弄断了，对吗？”
The boy was breathless, presumably from all that hammering on the door.

‘It’s snowing,’ he finally managed to gasp.
“在下雪”小男孩终于喘过了气的说道。
The Doctor smiled indulgently. ‘It’s Christmas. It’s always snowing.’
博士轻松的笑着说道“这里是圣诞小镇，这里总是在下雪。”
‘No, but – it’sreally snowing.’

The Doctor frowned. Symon’s cap was almost in need of another emptying.‘The Snow Farm?’ He peered past the boy, hoping to make out the distantchimney. But the air was thick with snow and he could barely see across thesquare.
眼见雪花又一次要落满Symon的帽子，博士皱了皱眉。“是雪场？”他越过男孩凝视着远方，期望能够辨认出远方的烟囱。但空气之中的雪花实在是太浓厚了，以至于他只能勉强看见广场对面。
‘I think maybeit’s gone wrong. I thought you should know.’
“我认为它可能出问题了，我想您应该知道原因”
‘I think Ishould,’ the Doctor agreed. ‘Thank you, Symon. Tell anyone you see that they’d better stay inside until this blizzard is over, will you? That includes you –get home, and stay indoors.’
“我觉得我应该知道”博士赞同的说道“谢谢你，Symon。告诉别你看见的还有他们应该待着室内直到暴风雪过去，好吗？包括你都回家去，然后待着室内。”
The boy turned to go. Then he hesitated – one last question: ‘Are youstaying indoors too, then?’

The Doctor fixed him with a sympathetic look. ‘In snow like this? Nochance. Handles!’ he called, ‘mind the shopwhile I’m gone. If anyone calls, tell them “No”.’
博士赞许的看着他说道“在这样的风雪里吗？新手是没有可能的！”他继续嘱咐“当我离开的时候你帮我暂时负责下这里，如果有人来问，他们是不是可以出去，告诉他们“不可以”。”
He retrieved his coat from a hook on the back of the door, toyed brieflywith the notion of a hat, then turned his collar up and headed out into theblizzard. It really was very cold, hethought. And very blizzard. Definitely real snow. Well, snow from the SnowFarm, but rather more of it than was intended. There was a chance – just achance – that something had gone wrong. But if he was a betting man, then theDoctor would have put good money (if he had any) on the snow being connected towhatever the Ice Warriors were up to.

With this in mind, he headed notfor the Snow Farm itself, but for a point between the Snow Farm and the ridgeabove the town. Visibility was down to just a few metres and he seemed to bespending more time than he’d like blinking snow out of his eyes. But dimly throughthe whiteout, he finally managed to discern the large lumbering form of an IceWarrior. Clearly in its element, the creature was wading through the deepeningdrifts as it made its way up the incline.
一边想着，他一边却并没有走向雪场，反而走向了雪场与小镇前山脊之间的点。能见度已经下降到了只能看清几米的距离，眼前不停飘落的雪花让他看上去花费了更多的时间。但是，透过白茫茫的雪光，他最终还是设法辨认出了寒冰武士庞大的身形。它是一个如此明显的标志，现在，它正在费力的穿过越来越厚的积雪，爬上斜坡。

The snow was getting heavier. The Doctor guessed that the Warrior had angled the output from the main chimney towards the ridge. But why? He trudged on, his coat thick with snow now. It was in his hair and his eyebrows. His boots seemed about twice the size they had been when he set off. He paused to shake himself suddenly and violently like a large upright dog back from a bracing swim. It wouldn’t be long before he’d have to do it again, he knew, but it helped.
雪，越下越大。那个武士应该是将调整了输出角度，将主要烟囱对向了山脉这边，博士猜测着。但是为什么这么做呢？他一边想一边费力的走着。雪，已经塞满了他的外套，须发皆白。看上去他的靴子比出发前大了一倍有余。他停顿了一下，突然剧烈地抖动起来着，就像一只巨大的直立的狗刚从一个令人精神振奋的游泳中回来。他知道，没过多久他就得再做一次，但这对他有帮助。
Less encrusted, the Doctor pressed on, following the Warrior as it made its way inexorably onwards. He kept well back, but had to judge it carefully. He didn’t want to Warrior to see him, but too far away and he’d lose sight of the Warrior. And the creature’s footprints offered little help as they filled up almost as soon as they appeared.
博士匆匆的向前，跟随者武士不可阻挡的向前开辟的道路。他紧紧的跟在武士的身后，但是他必须谨慎、小心。一方面，他不希望武士发现他，但另一方面，如果他离的太远了他就会失去武士的踪迹。尽管这个生物所留下的足迹一出现便很快被大雪覆盖，但至少也为他提供了一点帮助。
The Ice Warrior crested the ridge. It stood for a moment, silhouetted against the snow-strewn moonlight, looking back down into the valley where the town of Christmas lay nestled beneath a thickening white blanket. The Doctor sheltered behind a mount of snow, pressing himself into its cold embrace, listening for any clue that the Warrior had moved on. But all he could hear was the sigh and whisper of the wind.
寒冰武士已经走到了山脊之上。它站立了一会，月光之下，白雪覆盖的土地之上反衬出它暗色的轮廓，它回头看向圣诞小镇所在的山谷，此刻山谷上空正笼罩在一层越来越厚的雪云中。博士躲藏在一座小的雪山之后，尽力将身体压入冰雪之中，谨慎的听着任何武士移动的迹象。但，他所能听见的只有来自风的低语与叹息。

After a while, he risked peeking over the top of the mound. The Warriorhad gone. The Doctor struggled out of the mass of snow and up the final slope.His legs sank in up to his knees, so it was like wading through treacle. Notthat he had ever actually waded through treacle, but if he ever did this wassurely what it would be like.
过了一会，他冒着被发现的风险，偷偷的探出头向山顶看去。那个武士已经离去了。博士挣扎着从大块的积雪中爬出，走向了最后的斜坡。雪已经没过了他的膝盖，所以他看上去就像在糖浆中行走。不，这并不是说他曾经穿越过糖浆，但，试想一下，如果他真的那么做了，那一定就是现在这副摸样。
At the top, he paused for breath and to wipe his eyes clear of snow. Throughthe swirling flakes, he could see the Warrior ahead of him. In fact, he couldsee two Ice Warriors and an Ice Lord – all standing around a collection ofmetal components. And all staring back at him. He waved.
站在山峰的顶端，他屏住呼吸，轻轻的拂去眼前的雪花。透过旋转的碎雪，他可以清晰的看见一个武士正站在他的面前。事实上，他可以看见两个寒冰武士和那位寒冰领主正围在一堆金属组合物之前。他们齐刷刷的转头看向了他。博士挥了挥手。

楼主这边要开始动手写毕业论文了真的不能再拖了，所以更的会很少，但是楼楼尽力一天一更。

Getting down the slight incline to join them was easier than struggling upthe slope. The Doctor half ran and half tumbled into the scooped-out hollowwhere the Warriors were waiting. They had chosen an area in the shadow of aclump of moon-pines, so the blizzard was less fierce here. They seemed to bepartway through assembling whatever device the various components from the icecapsules made when fitted together. The Doctor took it in at a glance, then –his suspicions confirmed – turned his attention to the Ice Lord. It was best if they didn’t think he was at allinterested in what they were building.

‘Well, isn’t this cosy,’ the Doctor said, clapping his gloved hands together so that they sprayed a snowy mist. ‘I think the weather’s taken a turn for the worse.’ He noddedat the nearest of the two Warriors. ‘I assume that was your doing? Nipped offdown to the Snow Farm did you, pumped up the volume?’
“好吧，这里不是很舒服~”博士一边说着一边拍了拍手套，现在他们都罩上了一层薄薄的雪雾。“我还以为是天气变坏了”他冲着最近的两个武士点了点头“现在我猜这些都是你们做的，你们去了雪场，然后增大了泵的功率，对吗？”
‘That was mymission,’ Zontan hissed.
“这是我的使命”Zontan嘶嘶的说道
‘Well, jolly good. Well done.’ The Doctor clapped his hands together again. ‘Keep the snow harvestersin business for a while, I should think. Until we get it fixed.’
“嗯，好吧，做的好”博士又一次轻轻的鼓了鼓掌“我认为我们需要让造雪机工作一段时间了，直到我们把它修好”
‘It will not befixed,’ Lord Ssardak told him.
“它是不可能被修好的”Ssardak信心十足的告诉博士
‘You think?’
“你确信吗？”
‘I know. Thetown will be destroyed long before the damage can be repaired.’

‘I see.’ TheDoctor nodded sadly. ‘To kill one person, you’re prepared to destroy a wholetown. It’s a strange concept of honour you have.’

‘You know nothing of honour!’ Ssardak snarled. ‘We are here to prevent a war that wouldkill countless billions.’

‘You don’t need to kill anyone,’ the Doctor told him levelly.

‘You knew why wewere here,’ Ssardak said, standing close to the Doctor, staring down at him.‘We warned you to stay away from thetown. We have kept honour with you.’

‘I suppose youhave,’ the Doctor agreed quietly.

‘So why have youreturned, Elias?’

Chapter 6
‘I came to warn you,’ the Doctor said. ‘Amongst other things,’ he added, as it wasimpossible to lie.
“我是来警告你的”博士说道“还有一些其他的事情”他补充到，在这里是不可能撒谎的
But he didn’thave to elaborate.
但他其实不需要这样详细的说明
‘Warn us?’ Essbur gave a coughing laugh. ‘We fear nothing.’
“警告我们？”Essbur放声大笑起来“我们无所畏惧”
‘Oh,I believe you. But I came to warn you anyway.’
“嗯，对于这一点我深信不疑，但是我是来警告你们一些别的事情”
‘Warn us what?’Ssardak demanded.
“警告我们什么？”Ssardak询问到
‘That the Doctor knows what you are planning.’
“博士知道你们的在计划着什么”（Elias）
‘Our plans are too advanced for him to stop us now.’
“我们的计划已经进行了太多了，以至于他现在已经无法阻止我们了”
‘Are you sure about that?’ The Doctor shrugged. ‘Well, you can’t lie, so I suppose you must be. But you’re wrong.’
“你确信吗？”博士耸了耸肩说道“好吧，在这里你不能说谎，你肯定是这样想的，但是你错了”
‘The Doctor knows nothing,’ Zontan said. ‘How could he?’
“博士一无所知”Zontan说道“他能怎么办”
‘He’s not stupid. He knows you’ve sabotaged theSnow Farm. Only one reason to do that.’

‘Which is?’ Ssardak said.

‘To make snow. Obviously. Lots of snow. Lots and lots and lots of snow, and most ofit directed up here to the ridge above the town. Doesn’ttake a genius, though of course the Doctor is a genius, though I say so myself…’ He frowned. ‘Scrub that, forget I said it.’

Ssardaktook a step closer to the Doctor, regarding him suspiciously. ‘There is somethingdifferent about you, Elias.’

‘Frustratedtoo,’ the Doctor agreed.

‘Becausebefore I was just helping you get your bits and pieces together. Now I’m trying to save your lives. And, just for the hell of it, everyoneelse’s lives too. But consider that a bonus if youlike.’

‘Wehave our orders,’ Ssardak said. ‘The Doctor must die. It is regrettable that others will die too.’

‘Ifyou know our plan, you must stay here with us,’ Essbursaid.

‘Thatdecision is so wrong I won’t even start to explain why,’ the Doctor told him.

‘Butwhy don’t you finish assembling your sonic cannon andthen maybe we can talk about it.’

Ssardak’s fist shot out and grabbed the Doctor’s shoulder, grasping it painfully tight. ‘Howdo you know what we are constructing?’

‘TheDoctor guessed from the component he saw in the ice capsule.’ The Doctor shook himself free. ‘It’s clever, I’ll give you that. A sonicemission will just seem like the Doctor playing with his sonic screwdriver. Nocause for alarm upstairs. Not until it’s all over andthe Doctor is dead. And
eventhen it’llseem like an accident, won’t it. That’s why you need all the snow.’
“是博士从冰制太空舱里面的配件推测出来的，”博士从领主的手上挣脱开来“不可否认，你们这一点非常的聪明。一个声速武器就像博士正在玩弄他的音速起子一样，对上面的监控警报不会产生任何影响。直到博士死去，一切便都结束了。而这一切看起来就会像是一场事故，不是吗？这也是你为什么需要这么多雪花的原因。”
‘Ourmission is compromised,’ Essbur hissed angrily.
“我们的任务被识破了！”Essbur愤怒的嘶嘶道。
‘Ofcourse it is,’ the Doctor countered. ‘That’s what I’vebeen trying to tell you. The Doctor knows everything.’

Ssardakturned away with a snarl. ‘He cannot know everything. He would have evacuated the town.’
‘Itwas too late by the time he worked it out. No one can escape in this blizzard.Not far enough fast enough, anyway. The Doctor,’ herepeated, ‘knows everything. Everything except theexact frequency of your cannon, but he reckons that to do the job, to shear thesnow face, it must be on a setting of, what, about 73.5? Something like that?’
Ssardak转身愤怒的咆哮道“他不可能知道任何事情！如果是这样的话，他明明可以撤离这个小镇的！”
“当他解决了这个问题的时候，一切已经太晚了。没有人可以从暴风雪中逃脱，不管怎么样，始终还是不够快。博士”他重复道“他无所不知，除了你们的音速武器的频率，但他猜，你们这项工作需要改变暴风雪的朝向，那么它一定有一个相关的设置，大概是73.5吗？”
’74.2,’ Ssardak replied. His whole body seemed to stiffen slightly as hespoke, as if he was surprised by his own words.
“74.2”Ssardak回复道。他的整个身子非常的僵硬，看上去他对自己的回答感到十分的惊讶。
‘Yes,’ the Doctor said quietly. ‘The Truth Fielddoes that sometimes. Catches you unawares. It still gets me now and again whichcan be very embarrassing, I don’t mind telling you.’
“是的”博士快速的说道“真理之地，有的时候就会让你感到措手不及。毫不介意的告诉你，到现在他仍然会让我时不时的尴尬一下。”
Hetook a step backwards as Ssardak approached. The snow was piling up and it wasdifficult to move without falling over. The Ice Lord stood in front of theDoctor, towering over him, snow sprinkled across his helmet, shoulders andbreastplate. Behind him the other two Warriors watched impassively. Standingbrutal against the undulating white landscape.
伴随着Ssardak的靠近，他缓缓的向后退了一步。行于层层堆叠的白雪之上，不摔倒，这是一件非常困难的事情。寒冰领主站在博士的面前，从俯视着他，雪花落满了全身。在他身后，两名武士冷漠的看着。残酷的站姿，破坏了起伏的雪景。
‘Whenwe first met,’ Ssardak said slowly, ‘I asked you your name.’
“当我们第一次见面的时候”Ssardak缓慢的说道“我就问了你的名字”
‘Soyou did, Lord Ssardak.’
“所以你做到了，Ssardak领主”
‘Yousaid – your exact words were: “Youcan call me Elias”.’
“你说—你的原话是：你们可以叫我Elias”
‘I’ll take your word for it.’ The Doctorgrinned to show how unconcerned he was. It was about the only way to lie here.

‘Butthat is not an answer to the question. If you had answered, you would have totell the truth, but instead you made a statement that did not answer. “You can call me Elias” is not a lie, but itdoes not reveal your name.’

‘Whatis your name?’ Ssardak demanded. ‘Tell me, or my Warriors will kill you.’

‘Andif I do tell you, I think they’ll kill me anyway. Thoughin fact – and this really is the truth – saying my name, myactual real name, is the very last thing you want. Really.’
“我想，如果我告诉你我的名字的话，他们就会杀了我。尽管事实上—嗯，这的确是事实—相信我，说出我的名字，我真实的名字，会是你最不想要发生的事情”
‘Whoare you?!’ Ssardak roared.

Thesnow swirled round the Doctor’s head. It lodged cold and wet in his mouth as he grinned. ‘I thought you’d never ask.’ He said. ‘I’m theDoctor.’
雪花盘旋在博士的头顶之上，让他咧开微笑的嘴里又冷又湿，“我还以为你永远都不会问呢”他说道“我是，博士”
