Fellow 2yrs japanese learner here.
I haven't studied chinese yet but from the few chinese texts on the internet from time to time I'm able to say that it's either hit or miss.
There were sentences where I was able to read the whole text while nothing on others.
Has the same happened to you?

Grammar differ greatly, you will have some characters that you already know, except the pronunciation and some etymology but that's about it. Korean is closer to Japanese because it's almost the same grammar, maybe you could try learning it instead if you are interested.
语法有很大的区别，会有一些你已经知道是什么意思的文字，除了发音和一些词源外，但这就是问题所在。韩语和日语是比较接近的，因为语法是大致相同的，如果你感兴趣的话，你可以试着学韩语。

Use a pop-up add-on like Zhongwen or Perapera to speed up word look up and stop relying on jewgle translate. You'll learn vocabulary and grammar usage pretty quickly that way.

I gave up on learning(my current level is enough to fill up entire containers and explain the countless details needed for this), and now Im putting more effort on tagalog, vietnamese and indonesian.
this is gonna be my last trip ever to China, I promise I will never go back again.
