The 5th of July is a song about the night I was born. I sat down with my parents and I said can you guys tell me everything you can remember about that night. And what it was like for you and they said it was the middle of the night we jumped in the car and raced to the nearest hospital. My mom likes to say we drove like jehu and I said yeah that was the night we welcomed you into the world. I wrote the song because I loved this idea that we all began life at a certain time on a certain day. But none of us have any recollection of what the events of the day were like so we kind of have to rely on the descriptions of the people who were there. When you listen to the song my hope is that it inspires you to want imagine what that day was like maybe interview your parents to see if they can tell you what they remember. But the most important thing is that I hope it leaves you feeling thankful for life and for the parents who brought you into this world.
