Vice/Versa is a two part dance experiment, exploring two opposing facets of Aya Sato’s creative universe. The piece is a visual contemplation of creative, emotional, conceptual life elements, externalised and processed through Aya Sato’s distinctive dance style.

Her style is recognised for its combination of minimal bodily movements with rapid hand movements, also seen in her previous solo work, as well as her recent work as half of the duo Ayabambi, which was also choreographed and directed by Sato. The video represents an important new step in her solo dance and choreography career.

Choreography, styling, makeup and performance for the video were developed and executed by Aya herself. Using dance/movement, fashion and image as her expressive toolset, Aya simultaneously works through these internally conflicting forces, and creates a hypnotizing visual display for the viewer. Playing both characters of and as Aya. Embodying and attempting to reconcile both parts of herself, as herself. The video’s aesthetic further emphasises Aya’s use of dark occult imagery, form and style, as the backdrop for this internal dialogue.

Working in collaboration with the creative team formed for this production, who then also revolve around these oppositions, interactions and expressions of Aya’s internal realm, bringing new elements to her creative landscape.
