Interviewer: Welcome to our program, Yang Yang and happy Chinese New Year!
Yang Yang: Hi. Happy Chinese New Year!
Interviewer: Yang Yang, have you heard about the book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother written by Amy Chua?
Yang Yang: Yes, I have. Everyone is talking about it now.
Interviewer: How do you feel about it?
Yang Yang: Well, Amy Chua is a strict mom. And she represents lots of Chinese parents today.
Interviewer: In your experience, how strict is Chinese parenting compared with American parenting?
Yang Yang: Chinese parents are much stricter than American parents. In fact, I feel most American parents are too soft and too concerned about their children's feelings. This may prevent their children from reaching their full potential.
Interviewer: Yang Yang, you grew up in China while your husband is an American. So, how are parenting styles different between the two of you?
Yang Yang: I think my expectation is higher than my husband's. He thinks as long as our daughter can get fine grades, play some sports and be a whole person, he'll be happy. However, I expect her to get A's in her subjects. Also I expect her to study law or medicine in college. But my husband doesn't think that way. He believes that she can learn anything she likes.
Interviewer: Yang Yang, we'll have to finish here. Thank you for sharing your ideas with us.
Yang Yang: Thank you for inviting me here.
