While Britney slayed with “I'm a Slave 4 U” and Christina got “Dirrty,” Avril skateboarded in with sneakers, a tie, pin-straight hair, and studded bracelets. Michelle Branch was the girl next door, but Avril was that girl's rebellious best friend her parents said was a bad influence.
She was someone who didn't care what anyone else thought of her. Sure, she threw up a lot of unnecessary middle fingers, but I was drawn to her confidence and DGAF attitude. Her words magically convinced me it was cool to be different. I tried to be just like Avril. Breakout single “Complicated” boldly called out kids who pretended to be something they're not. She performed in t-shirts you could buy at the mall, and as her songs took over the radio, her casual pop-punk style became mainstream. Turns out, Avril's music wasn't about being different for the sake of being different. It was about being, well, YOU. From the start, staying true to yourself was Avril's personal brand.
But when fame first hit, she never stopped being that relatable teenager. Let Go spoke to the kids who felt like they didn't fit the mold, right before the mid-2000s emo scene welcomed them. I was recently reminded of this personal safe space at Emo Nite L.A., a giant party soundtracked exclusively by Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, and the like. These bands comforted me the same way Let Go once did. So I wasn't surprised when celebrity DJs Machine Gun Kelly and Halsey played “Sk8er Boi” to a roomful of twentysomethings reliving their emo phase. Avril wasn't the first artist to help someone feel less alone, and she certainly won't be the last.

"Complicated" dropped on the world like a cartoon anvil, sending reviewers into a tailspin. One of the coolest things about Avril Lavigne, looking back, is likely the cause of her undoing. Avril wore her teenage angst on her sleeve and was really ****ing ridiculed for it. "I'm With You" had perfect cadence. It captured the theatrics of 17-year-old feeling. And the cherry on top was the ever-relatable music video—directed by David LaChapelle—that forever changed the way a generation of kids walked down streets alone at night. As a teenage songwriter, she was outrageously talented.
Avril was behind the music of Let Go, and her style inspired a slew of kids to dress diffrerently: tank tops and dickies, Converse and studded belts. She, however softly, encouraged a repackaged kind of individuality. These things became commonplace soon enough, and bands like Good Charlotte and movements like emo moved more and more into the mainstream. Was she in part responsible? I'd say so.
