        The weakness of human beings
After reading the whole passage, there is a sentence that really impress me.
"We all had a drink together, native and Europeanalike, quite amicably. The dead man was a hundred yards away."
The sentence really sets me wondering the relationship between those people. The author is an Englishman from the Great Britain, and some others are Indians. It’s universally acknowledged that India was the British colony at that time. How could they laugh and talk with each other in such a fabulous atmosphere. The British army took their treasure, their land and their labor, however, they still made friends with them and even treated them with greatrespect.
It reminds of how we Chinese treated the foreign officials around1900s. They killed our citizens, robbed our national treasure, commandeered ourland without permission, but there were still many Chinese grovel to the oversea thieves. These Chinese betrayed their country and abandoned hisdignity, looking for multiple excuses for their disgrace actions.
Human beings are selfish and their desires are endless. In particular, the dreadful weakness of human nature of those people who have absolute power with plenty money and who are excessive poor are much easier to be evoked. Frankly speaking, flattering the intruders in a undignified manner is not a unique feature of a certain country’s people, but of the human beings, all the human beings. People tend to have various bottom lines because of different education backgrounds and life experience. So we have to admit the weakness of human nature and we can’t ignore it. What we should do it to help people establish perfect personality, boost the bottom line through education.

In my opinion, the sub-topic in this passage also includes indifference of human nature. The warders, superintendent and the head jailer didn’t care about what they had done to the prisoner. They just wanted to finish their task and flatter the superior. They even made fun of some dead prisoners who struggled when he was hanged. “Wriggling about, eh? That’s bad.”, the words spoken by the superintendent is so ruthless. And after hanging the prison, they relived, laughed even celebrated. It seemed that they won a game or they had done something good. They were the typical representatives of imperialism and totalitarianism.Only “I” showed sympathy to the poor prisoner, but “I” was helpless. What “I” could do was just to laugh as others.
Maybe some of warders felt sick or uncomfortable to hang the prisoner as “I”. But they can not show their feelings in the face of the superior. Maybe it was because they were soldiers and what they need to do was obey orders even if they felt it is wrong.
