Portuguese Under-17 international striker Rui joined Arsenal in the summer of 2006 from hometown club Sporting Lisbon. Fast, skilful and full of running, the youngster was a near ever-present for Neil Banfield’s second-string last season and scored two goals.

Nothing epitomises Rui’s tireless work-rate, absolute commitment to the cause and subsequent character than an injury sustained at Birmingham in a Reserve League South fixture midway through the season. Chasing a high bouncing ball that he had little right to win – everyone else had given up on it - the striker leapt wholeheartedly into a challenge with the goalkeeper in a bid to win the ball. He did just that, sending it agonisingly wide of the post but sustained a badly blooded nose for his troubles. Still bruised, he returned the very next match.
 
Rui started the current campaign with a substitute appearance in the traditional pre-season curtain-raiser against Barnet.
