Plug in or not?Why?
I can only think about 3 reasons why people may not plug in the machine.
One is that they may get bored about the 'perfect' life in the machine and become unhappy.Because the instrumental goods are only valuable if they provide good things to people,if we cannot get happiness from that machine,the machine would become meaningless.However ,the extra fun can be created by the person later on so this problem can be overcome.
Also,even if people won't know anything about the machine after plugging,they still aware this when they make the decision.This may cause the second problem:people usually less likely to choose to leave their families and friends behind.Well,to those who is going to plug the machine in,they may meet their families and friends just inside their brain and it's just as real as the reality,even more pleasant (unnecessary arguments or disagreement can be removed).And there would always be a time to say goodbye,I personally think the person's family should be happy for him because his life would end up with eternal joy that he desires.Actually,they can also plug in a machine like this.
Last but not least,people may choose not to plug in the machine because they do not or haven figure out what is his or her real wants are or what kind of person he's like to be.Feeling is a genetic thing after all.You can just choose what you like or dislike,it depends on who you are but not who you've chosen to be.For instance,one person's taste bud of sweet taste may be more sensitive can causes the brain to secret more dopamine (—which chemical that makes people happy.)In this case,people may not be certain about what is the real causes of them and it's hard to make decisions in this way.This is the only reason I cannot find words to fight against among these three reasons because one really has to find out what he likes before making any decision.
However,as most of the problems can be fight against with and this machine do provide us with instrumental goods which may only be valuable if they bring us intrinsic goods.And it may offer us the happiness that that we desire but is never possible in the reality.I think it would be a good idea to plug in the machine and yes,I'll choose to plug in if I've got the choice.
