When Chinese encountered more advanced Japanese Teppō (鉄砲) through Wokou (倭寇, Japanese coastal pirates), they quickly abandoned their own matchlock and started to copy Japanese design. Also around this time, Chinese began using corned gunpowder.
Chinese gunsmiths manufactured local copies of Japanese matchlock in large quantities. Ming troops from south China quickly accustomed themselves with this new weapon, but the same cannot be said for northern troops, which stubbornly refused to give up their handgonne.
