A London receptionist was sent home from work after refusing to wear high heels, it has emerged.
Temp worker Nicola Thorp, 27, from Hackney, arrived at finance company PwC to be told she had to wear shoes with a "2in to 4in heel".
When she refused and complained male colleagues were not asked to do the same, she was sent home without pay.
Ms Thorp said she would have struggled to work a full day in high heels and had asked to wear the smart flat shoes she had worn to the office in Embankment.
But instead she was told she should go and buy a pair of heels on her first day, back in December.
"I said 'if you can give me a reason as to why wearing flats would impair me to do my job today, then fair enough', but they couldn't," Ms Thorp told BBC.
"I was expected to do a nine-hour shift on my feet escorting clients to meeting rooms. I said 'I just won't be able to do that in heels'."
Ms Thorp said she asked if a man would be expected to do the same shift in heels, and was laughed at.
She then spoke to friends about what had happened, and after posting on Facebook realised that other women had found themselves in the same position.
She has since set up a petition calling for the law to be changed so women cannot be forced to wear high heels to work. It has had more than 10,000 signatures, so the government will now have to respond.
As the law stands, employers can dismiss staff who fail to live up to "reasonable" dress code demands, as long as they've been given enough time to buy the right shoes and clothes.
They can set up different codes for men and women, as long as there's an "equivalent level of smartness".
"I think dress codes should reflect society and nowadays women can be smart and formal and wear flat shoes." Ms Thorp said.
"Aside from the debilitating factor, it's the sexism issue. I think companies shouldn't be forcing that on their female employees."

I am in favor of Ms Thorp's resistence. Although we gotta appear elegantly during work time, the high-heel shoes are not essential. Conversely, wearing high-heel shoes may cause some inconvinences which will decrease the efficiency. Merely order female employees to wear unconfortable suits could be seen as gender discrimination.
I consider Ms Thorp has provided a sort of wise behaviours for us to fight for our rights and go up against all kinds of bias or prejudices bravely and tactfully.

I agree with Ms Thorp's proposal, too.Wearing high-heel shoes looks elegant, but high-heel shoes shorten the step and make walking slower and less steady. And wearers's feet may get hurt easily while working, wearing high-heel shoes for a long time is bad for health.Besides,in emergency circumstances, they cannot escape in time.If women are not forced to wear high-heel shoes while working, their rights, healthy and working status will vastly promote.

The feminism has been brought out fiece debate recent years and females always face with a lot of unfair treatments in their careers.Although high heel shoes was harm for females as a result of researchers, they were asked to do it in the office without agreement with a ridiculous reason such as the requirment of the work,it makes you elegant when you work and can give clients excellent impressions which represents the image of the company.I think employers should attach more importance to humanity and show respect to famale staffs. The best way is asking them to do with previous permission.

Women are requested increasingly higher these days.We need to attend to family and do well in our job.We need to be good-looking as well as knowledgeable. We women are also trying our best to improve ourselves. However,it is pretty cruel to push us becoming what men expect.

Ms Thorp formes a good example for us.Employers doesn't have any right to require female worker wear the high-heel shoes which are designed by those bosses.Or it would be regarded a kind of discrimination. So Ms Thorp is a hero .Her powerful advise open a new work world for the vast number of women.

Some dresses seem prettier with high-heels. Men habitually think high-heels are a symbol of feminism. However, it kills me to wear high-heel shoes for a long period of time.

This is kind of weird actually, but it does cater to the background and requirements of that industry. In some ways, there are more and more specific demands for the employees nowadays.
