Chinese students get meal discounts for being polite

A Chinese university is offering students a 50% discount in its canteen if they show some common courtesy to staff, it’s reported.
The new incentive has been implemented at Anhui Normal University in the eastern city of Wuhu, as part of campus-wide campaign to improve students’ manners, the official provincial news site Anhui Online reports.
To qualify for the discount, which cuts the cost of a meal from 6 yuan ($1; 60p) to 3 yuan, students only have to utter niceties such as "hello", "please" and "thank you". Anyone who tells staff "You worked hard" will also be rewarded.
"Recently the school hosted a great discussion into how we could introduce ideas about etiquette, and we considered how to give the canteen an educational function," says university official Jing Fangming.
While the idea might be popular the world over with cash-strapped students, it hasn’t impressed many users on Chinese social media. "I can’t believe you actually have to use money to get basic etiquette," writes one on the Sina Weibo microblogging site.
One person says using politeness as a "bargaining chip" reduces its value, while another thinks it’s a "tragedy" that civilised behaviour doesn’t come naturally. And some aren’t sure that rewards are the right approach, with one user asking: "Isn’t this how you train animals?"

In my opinion, this measure may take effect in a short period to help students be polite, but it is not enough in the long run.To improve students' manner deeply,we need to be educated and practice It in our daily life.

I can't agree the indeeds of Anhui Normal University and polite can't compare with money.Polite is a kind of tranditional culture in China, and what we need to do is to inherit and carry forward it.But the school officals unexpectedly gave students meal discounts for a reason in order to inhance their polite's awareness.

for a certain purpose.therefore.both educators and our ordinary people should do a introspection

I can’t believe universities actually have to use money to teach their students to get basic etiquette.Although it may take effect in a short period ,I still can't stand this kind of way to "encourage" students to be polite. While the idea might be popular the world over with cash-strapped students, it hasn’t impressed many users on Chinese social media. And I think polite can't be promoted by money,it should be promoted by human nature.

From this new ,we can see many students in China are not polite…It's pitiful. the university' target is not wrong, but the measure is useless. politeness should be our internal cultivation instead of making profit. I sincerely hope everyone can learn to be polite.

From my point of view,I think maybe this polite can be promoted by the strategy, but not the best way for that the strategy is hard to carry out moreover polity should not attach to money.

In my opinion, the idea that it want to make student more polite is good, but the way isn’t good. Changing the impolite phenomenon need doing in the education and the mind of students. Let students know the importance of manners. After all, everyone like others being polite to ourselves. So we need to be polite to others firstly.
