Interviewed by CNN, Jelena Djokovic spoke about Novak Djokovic Foundation and how important it"s early childhood education. It all started in 2011, when Novak was named UNICEF Ambassador. In 2012, his foundation raised $1.4 milion thanks to a benefit dinner in 2012 in New York, and $1.7 milion in London in 2013.
Jelena, who has a business degree, said to CNN: "Research has shown that if you don"t stimulate the brain enough from zero to six years of age, you are missing out on an opportunity that will never come back to you, because the brain grows exponentially until you are six." However, according to Jelena half of Serbian children, around 90.000, cannot have this chance.
The Foundation has been helping many kids, but there have been several difficulties too. Jelena says that in Serbia politicians who run for office every five or five years, have not liked this choice of investing in early childhood education, which is not a popular one in Serbia.
But Jelena and Novak"s mind is focused not only to help poor children, but also lucky children like their son Stefan, who was born in October 2014. "Both of us as parents are really passionate about giving a lot of opportunities to our child: we are reading a lot, we are exposing him to different stimulative environments. We are (implementing) the physical program, the intelligence program, the musical program and the languages program."
