With his membership to The Race Club, Hawke has challenged Gary Hall to a match race to take place in Australia following the Olympics. He said, "I am one of the shortest sprinters on the circuit, I have suffered from severe asthma since childhood, I have two children, and I still think I can whip you head to head. Some may say I am crazy and have no chance, but there is no greater show than Australia VS USA in world swimming. I am working out day and night to beat you in Athens and head to head so bring whatever you have because this time heart will beat talent."
Hall's response was, "Bring it on. We're very happy to have Brett Hawke as part of The Race Club and with that said, I'd be happy to beat him. We'll put on a great show in Australia following the Olympics. I love racing in that country."
