Fierce five member Mckayla Maroney has confirmed that she is stepping away from competition thus won't be trying for Rio.
The announcement came in a lengthy interview by Gymcastic which was recorded in October and released yesterday.
"I think it’s so hard for a gymnast or an athlete to leave their sport with peace" said the American gymnast. "I don’t want anybody to ever think that ‘Mckayla is retiring’. I don’t even want people to use that word."
"This is something that I’m always gonna be a part of. I’m never leaving this sport whether you like it or not."
"The only difference is I’m not competing anymore."
Maroney turned senior in 2011 where she won two gold medals at World championships, with her team and on vault. She went to the London Olympics as "the best vaulter in the World" and was heavily expected to win the gold medal on the event, but a fall on her second vault, which she has never fallen on before that moment, in the event finals had her settled for a silver.
The 20 year old athlete suffered from on going injuries during most of her competitive career. She suffered from a concussion following a fall few months before the Olympics and competed with a fractured shin and a broken toe while in London.
She fractured her left tibia on an uneven bars dismount during a post Olympic tour. After the 2013 World championships where she defended her vault title, she underwent four knee surgeries.
In 2015, the Olympic gold medalist announced her battle with mental illness.
Maroney whose retirement is not yet official, expressed desire in moving on to the entertainment industry.
