Even for the same colour, the understanding and the usage can be different. For example, white may be used to express purity and cleanliness, but in China, white is also related to death and funerals. Furthermore, in the West, white can be connected with weddings, which symbolise happiness.
Most importantly, colour exists in all aspects of our life, such as in advertisements, cloth, food, interior design, traffic identification and so on. So why and how do we use colours in our life? Let me talk about some personal reasons. Firstly, colour can affect cognitive competence. For example, when we see black, perhaps we will think of darkness. Secondly, colour can affect our intuition. For example, when people want to cross at the crossroads but the pedestrian light is red, people will stop automatically, but when it’s green, people will go to the other side freely, and when it’s flashing, people will pay special attention. Thirdly, colour can affect our habits of consumption. For example, when we see butter in a cake, we’ll be full of appetite; Coca-Cola uses red and white in its advertisement design, appealing to customers to buy their drinks; and McDonald’s also use red and yellow in its brand to draw people.
Colour has become an indispensable part for our building a harmonious society and constructing better homes. Just think, if we lived without colour, the world would be gloomy and life would lack vitally. We don’t want to lose our wonderful world, so it’s essential to live with colour, and it’s so important to all of us!
