Bridge of Spies, Steven Spielberg’s cold war spy thriller and potential Oscar contender, will launch its awards campaign at the New York film festival (NYFF).
The event will host the world premiere of Bridge of Spies (which stars Tom Hanks), ahead of its US release on 16 October. Spielberg’s last film, Lincoln, also premiered at the event – albeit as a “secret screening”.
Bridge of Spies stars Hanks as a cold war American lawyer recruited by the CIA to defend a soviet spy (Mark Rylance) and arrange for his swap with a captured U-2 pilot in east Berlin.
NYFF previously announced that it would open with the world premiere of Robert Zemeckis’s 3D drama The Walk, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Philippe Petit, the man who crossed the Twin Towers on a high-wire in 1974; and it willclose with the world premiere of Don Cheadle’s directorial debut, Miles Ahead, the biopic of jazz musician Miles Davis. There will also be a centerpiece screening of Steve Jobs, Danny Boyle’s biopic starring Michael Fassbender as the Apple innovator.
Laura Israel’s documentary Don’t Blink: Robert Frank, about the photographer and film-maker, is making its world premiere at the event. Other highlights include Todd Hayne’s lesbian period romance Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara; The Assassin, which won Hou Hsiao-hsien best director at Cannes; Dogtooth director Yorgos Lanthimos’ English-language debut, The Lobster; Rebecca Miller’s New York-set romantic comedy Maggie’s Plan, starring Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore, Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph; and Michael Moore’s latest expose, Where to Invade Next, which is having its world premiere in Toronto.
