Several designers chimed in on the debate at Gaultier’s final ready-to-wear show, including Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott, who credits Gaultier with making him want to go into fashion design. “Fashion has sped up to an accelerated rate that’s nearly inhuman, and I think that at least if he wants to stop this and focus on couture and take a little time for his own life, then I think it’s quite beautiful,” said Scott. “Even though I’m kind of sad at the same time, but I want to celebrate him for also having the strength of character to make that decision. It takes a lot of guts.”

Walter Van Beirendonck blamed the fashion industry—and the press—for the increased demand for collections, but said that there’s no going back to the days when there were only two seasons each year and that it’s up to the designers to choose what’s right for themselves. “It cannot slow down," said Van Beirendonck. "We currently have a kind of changing moment in the fashion world, and certain people, they can go, and other people will stop or will change, or will do it differently.”

Gareth Pugh lauded Gaultier for making his decision. “I think it comes to the point where you just have to make a choice, and I think that it’s nice that people are able to make that choice,” said Pugh. “I don’t necessarily agree that you should always feel the need to just keep doing something if you don’t want to do it. I think it’s a very brave decision for someone to go, ‘You know what? I’d rather do other things.’ He needs a life. We all need a life, and sometimes it can get a little bit much for everybody. I’m sure there’s a lot more reasons than that, so good for him.”

Rick Owens doesn’t mind the ever-growing fashion schedule. “I love this speed,” he said. “But, everybody gets to do it the way they want, and the fact that he decided he’s going to do it the way he wants—how radical can you be? He’s always been radical, and that’s even more radical. Good for him.”
