(Seeing Possibilities)
It was from these circumstances that the Trees for Life Project was bornby the UKZN Enactus team. They found a sponsor who purchased 700 seedlings fromthe Wildlands Conservation Trust and engaged Primary Schools where oneindigenous tree was allocated to groups of 3 learners who had to nurture andtrack the progress of their seedling through a journal. This was done inconjunction with the school where training and manuals (handbooks) weredeveloped.
(Taking Action)
The UKZN Team successfully partnered with 3 provincial departments to rollout this programme, and also engaged an expert environmentalist, Wally Menne, who has offered his expertise to identify relevant indigenous tree speciessuitable for the area.
In providing a solution for the community, the UKZN team tackled thepollution problem that threatened the health and environment of the Durbansouth community. This exercise also had the added benefit of fostering anenvironmentally conscious mind-set in the participating learners.
