10. On My Mother's Birthday
Clad in all their brightest green,
This day the verdant fields are seen;
The tuneful birds begin their lay,
To celebrate thy natal day.
The breeze is still, the sea is calm,
And the whole scene combines to charm
The flowers revive, this charming May
Because it is thy natal day.
The sky is blue, the day serene,
And only pleasure now is seen;
The rose, the pink, the tulip gay,
Combine to bless thy natal day.

    11.The Polar Bears
    When did you last see a polar bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3°C, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York, are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along with everyone else in the group; this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.

      Doctors do not agree about the medical effect of cold water swimming. Some are worried about the dangerous condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops.

        The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water.

          The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says, "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."

            12.Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat
            In this crisis I hope I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today, I hope that any of my firends and colleagues or former colleagues who are affected by the political reconstruction will make all allowances for any lack of ceremony with which it has been necessary to act.

              I would say to the House as I said to those who joined the government, I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering.

                You ask, what is our policy? I will say it is to wage war by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us, to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy.

                  You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. Victory. Victory at all costs--victory in spite of all terror--victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.

                    Let that be realized. No survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for, no survival for the urge, the impulse of the ages, that mankind will move forward toward his goal.
                    But I take up my task with buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men.
                    At this time, I feel entitled to claim the aid of all and I say, "Come then, let us go forward together with our united strength."

                      13.Science- a Way of Thinking
                      Many scientists, from their earlier work, have enough knowledge to make good guesses as to the solution of a problem they are working on. In making new discoveries, they may use the trial-and-error method, they may draw on past experiences, or they may try to find out what others have discovered. They may design new investigations and new ways of testing their results. Scientists have to train themselves to use their brains efficiently; that is, they train themselves to think.

                        For example, when Thomas A. Edison was trying to make an electric lamp, he needed a substance for the filament inside the bulb that would glow brightly without burning up quickly. He tried more than thousand different filaments before he found one that he could use. After each trial he thought about how the new substance had acted. He kept notes and compared results. After he had experimented for a long time, someone asked Mr. Edison if he were not discouraged at the waste of time. He replied,"I have not been wasting time. I have found one thousand materials that won't work. Now I can look for others." Edison 's statement is all-important. Above all, scientists demand to know when and where they are wrong. A good question to ask in science is not "Am I right?" but "Am I wrong?
                        "

                          Scientists spend many years of study, training themselves in using their brains and the tools of investigation. They also use each other's work. Isaac Newton, a British scientist, who lived over 300 years ago, said he saw further than others because he stood on the shoulders of giants.

                            14. Are These the Best Years of Your Life?
                            The ups and downs of life may seem to have no predictable plan. But scientists now know there are very definite patterns that almost all people share. Even if you've passed some of your "prime", you still have other prime years to experience in the future. Certain important primes seem to peak later in life.

                              When are you happiest? You have the best physical sense of yourself from 15 to 24; the best professional sense from 40 to 49.
                              Before age 24, we believe that our happiest years are yet to come; over 30, we believe that they're behind us. A National Health Survey agrees: After age 30, we "become more realistic and do not view happiness as a goal in itself. If we maintain our health, achieve professional and emotional goals, then happiness, we feel, will follow."
