——选自第二节《凯兰崔兰和凯勒鹏的历史》(THE HISTORY OF GALADRIEL AND CELEBORN) 附录B 《西尔凡精灵中的辛达贵族》(THE SINDARIN PRINCES OF THE SILVAN ELVES)

APPENDIXB
THESINDARIN PRINCES OF THE SILVAN ELVES
In Appendix B to The Lord of the Rings, in theheadnote to the Tale of Years of the Second Age, it is said that "beforethe building of the Barad-dûr many of the Sindar passed eastward, and someestablished realms in the forests far away, where their people were mostlySilvan Elves. Thranduil, long in the north of Greenwood the Great, was one ofthese."
Something more of the history of these Sindarinprinces of the Silvan Elves is found in my father's late philological writings. Thus in one essay Thranduil's realm is said to have
extended into thewoods surrounding the Lonely Mountain and growing along the west shores of theLong Lake, before the coming of the Dwarves exiled from Moria and the invasionof the Dragon. The Elvish folk of this realm had migrated from the south, beingthe kin and neighbours of the Elves of Lórien; but they had dwelt in Greenwoodthe Great east of Anduin. In the Second Age their king, Oropher [the father ofThranduil, father of Legolas], had withdraw northward beyond the GladdenFields. This he did to be free from the power and encroachments of the Dwarvesof Moria, which had grown to be the greatest of the mansions of the Dwarvesrecorded in history; and also he resented the intrusions of Celeborn andGaladriel into Lórien. But as yet there was little to fear between theGreenwood and the Mountains and there was constant intercourse between hispeople and their kin across the river, until the War of the Last Alliance.
Despitethe desire of the Silvan Elves to meddle as little as might be in the affairsof the Noldor and Sindar, or of any other peoples, Dwarves, Men, or Orcs,Oropher had the wisdom to foresee that peace would not return unless Sauron wasovercome.
