I was scared as I waited for Francis and Al to rehearse what I now refer to as the “It was an abortion” scene. I told myself I didn’t care about The Godfather or Al Pacino, but I did. Especially about Al Pacino. He was going with Tuesday Weld. Jill Clayburgh was out, or hovering, like so many others. Things had skyrocketed for Al. He had become an iconic, larger-than-life figure on billboards all over town. He was Michael Corleone. He was Serpico. At the time of the rehearsal we weren’t speaking, or, rather, he wasn’t speaking to me. Maybe I said something to hurt his fellings, I don’t remember.

Al Pacino: [surprised laughter]
Katie Couric: Whoa
Al Pacino: I dream about that questions,that somebody’s gonna ask me that question on national television, and i’m going to say, i don’t know. I’m also going to say, well, maybe i will one day. Or…I’m a little young for marriage.
Katie Couric: You have 9 years old twins.
Al Pacino: I can tell you I should have.
Katie Coric: What? Gotten married?
Al Pacino: A couple of times.
Katie Couric: Who?
AlPacino: Ah, I can’t say, but I made a mistake not to. If that means anything. What I’m saying is, there’s still hope.
