•Another purpose is to give information about Admiral Duncan and his victory over the Dutch at Kamperduin.
•The writer educates the readers by providing background information about Camperdown House.
•The piece also could be to persuade the readers to buy the video.
Intended readers
•The piece of writing is an article which has been taken from a quality newspaper, for it is laid out with headlines and columns with complex language and sentence structure, for example: “generations of Dundonians have enjoyed the wide-open spaces of Camperdown park, with the Georgian House providing an architectural diversion from the greenery”; “Britain was engaged in a long and attritional struggle against revolutionary Europe.”
•Therefore it is aimed at adults with good reading skills.
•Its intended reader would also be people who are interested in history and architecture and local people who have already visited Camperdown park and recognize the picture of the house.
Evaluation
•The writer does achieve his/her purpose effectively.
•In terms of the layout, the headline draws the readers’ attention to the contents of the writing directly.
•The brief summary which is bold and below the headline gives an easily-read synopsis.
•Enough white space has been left to help the readers to get the information clearly and easily.
•The picture placed in the middle is eye-catching. However, it could be slightly enlarged.
•As for the format, this is an article taken from a quality newspaper, with necessary elements including the headline, a brief summary, byline and columns. It follows the conventions of format of a quality newspaper article.
•As far as the structure is concerned, the author adopts a logical and clear sequence to compose the article. First, the author tells the readers a film, If Trees Could Talk, has been created in the brief summary. Then, the author recalls the historical events in Britain, which can reflect the achievement of Admiral Duncan.Next, the author quotes from relevant people to state the reasons to release the film. In the end, the author concludes the article by encouraging the readers to get a DVD of the film.
•When it come to language, the author mainly ueses complex language and a formal register, for example: "Britain was engaged in a long and attritional struggle against revolutionary Europe"; "The building was one of the premier examples of Georgian building, with Ionic columns, marble pillars, and an exquisite fireplace."
In addition, when describing the park and the house, the author usesemotive words such as "enjoyed", "wide open spaces", "premier" and "exquisite" to stir the curiosity and enthusiasm of the reader.
What’s more, the paragraph where the writer addresses the reader with ‘you’ is approachableand is good at encouraging the readers to see the film.
