The aspect that I am focusing on is worklife and career during Japanese Occupation. I found this source at the NationalMuseum of Singapore at “Singapura: 700 Years” exhibition. It show people’sworking situation during Japanese Occupation.
Source 2 says “Life was difficult and manystruggled to make a living. Civil servants were recalled to their jobs and manypeople engaged in businesses to earn money, but money was not as important asfood. Many people preferred to be paid in terms of food items and meals ratherthan in the local currency that became increasingly worthless with runawayinflation.”
From Source 2, Ican infer that the work life during the Japanese Occupation was harsh. Source 2says: “Many people preferred to be paid in terms of food items and meals ratherthan in the local currency that became increasingly worthless with runawayinflation.” This suggests that despite being paid in money, the money seemeduseless as it had lost its value. The money the people earned was not enough tobuy food or other necessities for family or even individually as the priceswere high and expensive. The workers were working the same amount of time, butthe goods which their salaries could get them, were lesser than before theJapanese Occupation. Their salary could not afford them what they needed tosurvive.
