Hiccup's Dragon Blade – Art of HTTYD2
For the second installment of How to Train Your Dragon, it was important to show how much Hiccup knew about dragons, how much “being a dragon” was a second nature to him. The two biggest challenges were the flying and the fire. The flying was solved with the flying suit, designed masterfully by Nico Marlet and Peter Chan.
The fire was solved with The Dragon Blade – a type of fire breathing multi-tool.
「 One end coasts the blade in Monstrous Nightmare saliva, the
other sprays Hideous Zippleback gas. All it takes is a spark
and…」
-Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III
One of the design rules of the movie was to make it as believable as possible. Here you can see how that was applied to the Dragon Blade, and how that informed the design of the canisters. We didn’t want to fake any aspect of it. So, the telescopic blade actually fits inside of the handle, and canisters have grooves that help it fit like a puzzle piece inside the handle. And the same concept was used to design the holder attachment. It had to be simple, provide easy and fast access, and be believable.
Hope you enjoy.
