Product modularity is a property of product architecture. Products can be ‘‘modular’’ or ‘‘integral’’ depending on the allocation of the functions to the modules and on the nature and the number of the interfaces. In a pure modular product architecture each module performs only one function and interfaces are standard. Fixson develops a tool for assessing product architecture and classify products depending on the level of modularity. He specifies three main characteristics of interfaces: nature, reversi- bility and standardization. Product modularity implies that changes in one module of the product require few or no changes in other parts of the product.
