Tonight's episode of Young & Hungry is going to be a good one. Ashley Tisdale, the executive producer of the show, is guest starring, and she's about to shake things up with a totally unexpected new role. Turns out her character, Logan, has a thing for Emily Osment's character, Gabby, and you won't even believe what happens next.
Ashley's had her own company, Blondie Girl Productions, for quite a while now, but after doing both unscripted and reality shows, this is her very first sitcom. "Each step was really exciting. We found out we got picked up to script then picked up to pilot, and then you get picked to series. It's really awesome," she says. "It's been two-and-a-half years since we had our first conversation about this project, so seeing it premiere has been so exciting to finally have it out there."
When it came to casting Emily as the show's lead, it was a no-brainer. "I knew Emily, but I didn't know her super well," Ashley says. "I had seen her over the past couple years just at auditions. I always thought she was so nice and so sweet and talented, and when I saw her on the list, I was like, 'She's Gabby—this girl is Gabby.' When she came in, she knocked it right out. The process actually really helped me as an actress because I realized it's nothing personal—you're either the part or you're not the part. It's been really cool to work with her."
Perhaps not surprisingly, there are major perks of producing a show, including getting to jump in the action on-screen. Ashley might be a vet when it comes to acting (anyone else miss High School Musical?!), but the world's about to see her in a whole new light after tonight's episode. "This is definitely a different role than I've ever played. I've been wanting to push myself out of my comfort zone and play characters that people would never expect, and this is one of them," Ashley says. "Logan is a magazine editor who's there to interview Jonathan, but takes a liking to Emily's character. Then stuff gets a little crazy."
These two former Disney girls basically pulled a Miley and made everyone's mouths drop open when they lean in for a big, on-screen kiss. "It was really funny because we have a live audience and they didn't know what was about to happen," she continues. "You're nervous, but you're excited because you're like 'Oh my God, they're going to freak out.' We wanted to make sure it was a really good kiss, and Emily just went for it. I was like, 'Whoa.' During rehearsal it's awkward because you have so many people staring at you, but it was really funny. I was like, 'I'm supposed to be the lesbian on the show!'"

Emily Osment is the definition of busy. Seriously—look it up and you'll find her name there. While we're complaining about not getting enough time to watch our favorite TV shows each week, she's the one who's starring in those shows and still manages to make time to go to school, write music, and have a social life. Now that's impressive. With the premiere of her new series Young & Hungry tonight at 8/7c on ABC Family, her life is about to get even more insane, and we have no doubt she's ready for it.
Anyone who loved Emily as Lilly in Hannah Montana will adore her new character Gabi, a wannabe chef who gets her big break when she lands an interview to become a personal chef. And a personal chef for whom, you ask? A guy named Josh, who's only the most attractive young entrepreneur ever. In order to secure her dream gig, she has to put together a romantic meal for Josh and the girlfriend he's planning on proposing to (no pressure, right?), but the night definitely doesn't go as planned. (Yeah, uhh, you can see what we mean in the trailer below.) Obviously this show sounds amazing, and Emily loved getting the chance to make her role as fun and exciting as possible. "I'm trying to make this character my own," Emily tells us. "I haven't had the chance to build a character in a long time. You're starting at the beginning of a race and you don't know where you're going to end up, but you change along the way and it's really fun to watch my character grow."
Going to regular classes meant being around a lot of people who obviously knew who she was, but lucky for Emily, some of her best friends came out of those years she tried being as normal of a teenager as she could be. "It was really cool to see how supportive they are in like a non-freaky way," Emily says of her high school friends. "Like a friendly, we-care-about-you, we've-known-this-person-for-so-long way." Going to Occidental was still amazing for the actress, but maybe a little crazier post-HM. "I went to a little college and I knew everyone there. There were some people who were a little weird...and things got kinda weird." If we looked over and saw Emily sitting in one of our lectures, we'd probably get a little weird too. Just sayin'.
Now that Emily is almost done filming the first season of Young & Hungry, she's planning on taking advantage of the hiatus from set to work on her music. Her original record label was shut down, but she definitely has her eyes open to new opportunities to start recording again. And after her previous hits (please tell us you remember "Lovesick," you guys) we really, really hope she does. "I've been writing so much on my own, and it's just about finding somewhere to put it," Emily says. "I really have a lot of stories I want to tell, I just need the right outlet for them." No matter what her future plans are, we know one thing's for sure—this girl is on fire.
