7:00 pm, Sunday January 20th, Rulun Hall Auditorium, Renmin University:
The auditorium resembles a packed concert hall. An army of television cameras are perched on tripods that form a jagged fence along the narrow mezzanine level. Security guards and camera men go head to head about where they can set up. Quite the frenzy.
50 minutes before action hits the stage, audience members (mostly members of the media) bust out their personal digital cameras and start taking snapshots of the 2008 Olympic banners streaming from the balconies and of the extravagant set up on the stage, which is graced by a black grand piano and a "da zi mou" big enough to make the LCD celing screen at "The Place" look mediocre.
15 minutes before the ceremony goes live to air across the nation, people still standing begin to act like chickens with their heads cut off as they scrummage about, pushing and shoving between the narrow aisles in an effort to find the few remaining seats blanketed by coats and hand bags.
