These are some of the art works I've done in the past, mostly during high school. Before I went into journalism, I actually wanted to become an artist...and an actress, and a writer. But the "rat-race" mentality of our society prevents a lot of people from pursuing their ultimate passion. Instead of doing what we love, we are okay with just doing what we are good at for a living if it puts bread on the table. I guess I feared that I would become one of the starving artists I often saw painting chalk drawings on the sidewalks of downtown Toronto.
I resolved that I was a decent writer and that pursuing journalism would provide more stability than becoming an artist. Yes, I chickened out. I figured that painting and drawing is something I could do during my spare time, a hobby and talent that would always be there. I didn't have to devote my entire life to it and possibly end up like Klimt, who lived with only one cat and eventually one ear.
Moral of my little tale: You have one life to live. You make your bed, you lie in it. There's an opportunity cost in every decision and you cannot be everything at once, but it's never too late. One of my New Year's Resolutions was to get back into doing things that I enjoy. Art is one of them, playing the guitar (if I can ever stick to scheduling a lesson in less than 2 months apart) and Latin dancing of course. All work and no play makes for a sad day. So much easier said than done, but life should be about balance, and if you don't feel like playing, even up the scales with the things that make you happy. Get creative and be a kid again.
