1. What are your duties as a mess boy?
服务生的职责是什么？
Every day I help the Chief Cook clean the dishes and vegetables. I clean the cabins of the Master the Chief Engineer, the Chief Officer and the First Engineer and other public places. I also lay tables; make coffer or tea for the guests of the Master and the ship. I do some other odd jobs if I asked to do so.
服务生应该对船长负责，日常工作向大厨报告。服务生应该根据船长批准的工作和伙食计划提供餐饮服务。具体工作包括：协助做好上伙食工作；根据大厨的要求负责船上生活洗涤，分发床单等；船上干部船员房间的保洁，帮助大厨清洗廊道；协助大副、值班驾驶员和水手长洗舱。

2. As an OS on board your last ship, what did you do every day?
作为水手，上条船每天都做什么?
Under the leadership of the bosun and officers, I just did some odd jobs, such as chipping the rust, scraping the paint, cleaning the holds, sweeping, wiping, and sometimes, did some port watch, sea watch and gangway watch etc. Anyway, I did whatever the bosun or officer asked me to do.

3. What are the duties of an OS?
普通水手的日常工作是什么？
An OS is responsible to the Bosun. He is supposed to do the following: (1) Deck maintenance under the command of Bosun;
(2) Lookout or double watches at sea and in port when required by the Master or the Chief Officer; (3) Assistance in rigging accommodation and pilot ladders;
(4) Care and maintenance of facilities and equipment under the control of the deck department. (5) Cleaning the deck and cargo hold.
普通水手应该对水手长负责，主要做如下工作：协助值班驾驶员做好货物装卸；协助驾驶员做好甲板的维修、保养和船上备件的管理；听从水手长的有关工作安排和大副及值班驾驶员的有关命令；海上及港口值班；协助做好引航员梯的调放；甲板管辖设备的看护和保养。

4. When working on board, what are the important things you (as a OS or mess-boy) need to care about?
作为水手或服务生，你认为在船工作时哪些方面对你很重要？
First of all, I need to know the importance of safety. I have worked on board only for one year and one ship. So I am not very familiar with the safety working procedure. Safety is important not only to me, but also to my family, the ship, the environment and the shipwoner and agent.
Second, I should work as hard as possible. I should listen to orders of Bosun and officers. If everyone works hard, everybody will happy and satisfied.
Third, good relation with my superiors and colleagues is also important.
Last, it is important for me to learn from others on board. As a young sailor, I have too much that need my learning, including English language ability, steering skills, all types of operational work and so on.
