    Jan. 16, 2014 ·R&B 40: 1980
    By Andy KellmanIf
the gripes about disco's destruction of rhythm and blues seemed silly during the late '70s and the '80s, they're unequivocally wacky in 2014, considering the harmful industry developments that followed and the passing of time. In 1980, Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart featured a whopping 520 R&B singles -- as well as a handful of rap cuts. Bountiful is the first word that comes to mind. After narrowing the favorites down to 40, it was obvious that far too much brilliance was left out, so monthly charts were made. They appear beneath the playlist link. It was tough to eliminate several selections, such as Pointer Sisters' "He's So Shy" (an August debut), from those countdowns. Classics came from many corners, both stylistically and geographically, including chunky synth-funk, sophisticated roller-skating jams, weightless ballads, Italian disco, and Japanese electro-pop. Young Prince got dirty, while Luther Vandross, front and center in number 14, emerged from extensive session work and a fledgling solo career. We also got the final album fromMinnie Riperton, whose life was taken the previous July by cancer, as well as two great albums from Teena Marie -- the first of which was made with Riperton's grieving widower, Richard Rudolph.
The year's most progressive music was put together by Leon Sylvers III, who had recently graduated from writing and producing for his own group -- the Sylvers -- to being the in-house producer for Dick Griffey's Solar label. His slick, sparkling sound is epitomized by the Whispers' "And the Beat Goes On" and Shalamar's "Right in the Socket." Sylvers also took on work for other labels, such as Chocolate City, whose 7th Wonderappears in the September chart. That man's presence and aftershocks will be felt in the next several R&B 40s.

          Jun. 5, 2014 · Features / Lists – R&B 40 / PlaylistsR&B 40: 1984
By Andy KellmanPrince's mainstream takeover commenced in early June 1984. That's when the boldly bass-less "When Doves Cry"—a preview of the June 25 release Purple Rain—began its ascent. The same month, Princely hits from Sheila E. and the Time also registered on Billboard's Black Singles chart. While Prince was indeed dominant, serious R&B fans with wider scopes saw the year as a nonstop battle between him and former Time members Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (and often Monte Moir), whose blazing work with the S.O.S. Band, Change, Cherrelle, Thelma Houston, and Gladys Knight & the Pips filled airwaves as well.
Along with "Let's Go Crazy," "Purple Rain," and "Sex Shooter," Prince also scored when Chaka Khan updated "I Feel for You" with help from Grandmaster Melle Mel, Stevie Wonder, and the System's David Frank. The same year, Frank and System partner Mic Murphy, whether together or apart, assisted Mtume, Howard Johnson, Evelyn "Champagne" King and, last but not least, Angela Bofill. Like Chaka, the Pointers, and Houston, Bofill was established diva who surprisingly adapted to cutting-edge electronic sounds with excellent results.
There were some major warning flares. One was in Teddy Pendergrass' number five hit "Hold Me," a duet with an on-the-brink Whitney Houston. Strange how neither her image nor name appeared on the seven-inch sleeve, though the song was tacked to the end of her debut album, released the following February. Less obvious were charting singles from the New Edition-like Kids at Work, co-written by group members Teddy Riley and Timmy Gatling. Within a couple years, Riley would be a hot rap and R&B producer, while he and Gatling would also form Guy. Additionally, in late November, Sade casually slid into view with their supremely sophisticated first charting single.
Not to be missed: number 26, produced and arranged by disco dons Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael with lead vocals from onetime ex-Coconut Fonda "Over Like a Fat Rat" Rae. In Nightmare on Elm Street 2, Jesse Walsh bumped his dresser to it. A few years later, Cathy Dennis' cover narrowly missed the top of the Hot 100.

Not enough loved R&B songs charted in 1985 to warrant monthly top tens. Just beneath the 40, A-Z: Steve Arrington's "Feel So Real," Change's "Let's Go Together," Cheyne's "Call Me Mr. 'Telephone' (Answering Service)," Full Force's "Girl If You Take Me Home" and "Alice, I Want You Just for Me!," Marvin Gaye's "Sanctified Lady," Thelma Houston's "(I Guess) It Must Be Love," Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love for You," Freddie Jackson's "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)," Jesse Johnson's Revue's "Be Your Man" and "I Want Your Girl," Chaka Khan's "Through the Fire," Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Your Personal Touch," Loose Ends' "Choose Me," Madonna's "Angel," Alexander O'Neal's "A Broken Heart Can Mend," Greg Phillinganes' "Behind the Mask," the System's "This Is for You," and the Whispers' "Some Kinda Lover." Last but not least, there was Bobby Womack's "I Wish He Didn't Trust Me So Much" -- one of the coldest songs ever recorded. It was Womack's last Top Ten hit. Rest in peace, Poet.
