[Album Review] CN Blue “Can’t Stop” ( Reviewer HELLOKAY)
CN Blue – Can’t Stop
CN Blue – Diamond Girl
CN Blue – Cold Love
《Cold Love》
CN Blue – Sleepless Night
《Sleepless Night》
CN Blue – Love Is…
CN Blue – Like A Child
《Like a Child》使我想起了U2的歌曲。

CNBLUE is back with their latest Korean release. Waiting for “Can’t Stop” we were curious what kind of sound CNBLUE would pursue this time. Throughout their still short albeit successful career they seemed like a group with a lot of freedom to experiment. Their last title track “I’m sorry” certainly set the bar pretty high. The release of “Can’t stop” left us with mixed feelings. It certainly is a very solid release but we craved for something more.
TUNE
“Can’t Stop” is a good song. It has a nice flow and makes for a pretty easy listening material. However, we can’t shake the feeling that music wise it’s a step back from “I’m sorry”. We can’t really tell if CNBLUE’s return to the popish sound was their conscious artistic choice or a well-executed marketing strategy. “Can’t stop” is more public friendly than “I’m sorry”. Unfortunately it’s also a lot less original. The composition is pretty common and gives the feeling that we heard tons of other songs that sound very similar to “Can’t Stop”. The song is still nice, but it doesn’t sound fresh and exciting. It lacks power and is quite predictable. The arrangement is not exactly hackneyed, CNBLUE makes it sound pleasant, but it’s not a sound that is unexpected and inventive. CNBLUE always puts out solid releases that are enjoyable, even addicting, but in our opinion they lack in the artistry department. It’s not bad in correlation to kpop idols that re-create more than create, but CNBLUE lately does everything in their power to not be seen as another kpop group, so we’ll try to evaluate them under the assumption that they are responsible for all the artistic choices that were made during the creation of “Can’t Stop”. Frankly, we believe that putting out “Can’t Stop” CNBLUE was playing it safe. There’s no experimenting with the sound, no artistic curiosity or imaginativeness. “Can’t stop” is a mix of tired and true musical formats blended into one. It sounds like it was created by taking the parts of already existing pieces and putting them into this song, instead of creating something new. Granted, the blending and mixing was done skillfully, that’s a talent in itself, but from an artist we’d expect something more daring, inspired and personal. We can’t feel an ounce of inspiration from “Can’t Stop”. We hoped for something more creative and experimental for a song that came out after “I’m Sorry”, instead we got CNBLUE’s rendition of already whitewashed and generic sounds.
MV ORIGINALITY
The MV is quite lighthearted and colorful. We get a lot of shots of the band playing with some “plot” scenes here and now. The plot is pretty simple and underdeveloped – Younghwa and a girl he seems to have feelings for live side by side separated by the big mirror, so they can’t meet each other. He observes her for the most time, and finally gets up and crashes the mirror separating them. We guess they get their happy ending, being able to finally meet and all. We heard the opinions that the girl is rather redundant in the MV, but we think that she actually fits quite nicely. It’s not an MV that keeps us on the edge of our seat or one we’d feel the need to see more than once, but it’s enjoyable nevertheless.
LYRICS
We have to admit that for a love song “Can’t Stop” has a pretty decent lyrics. Even if the subject of the song isn’t original, the execution of the words isn’t cliché. “Can’t Stop” tells us about a guy that is obsessing and in love with this person. Unfortunately, he already had his chance and blew it. He sings this song to express his longing and sorrow. The lyrics aren’t maybe the most poetic or ingenious, but they’re also not that obvious. There are some nice sentences here and there. This song gives us hope for more lyrical development in the future.
Summing up, CNBLUE released another solid release. Unfortunately, it also seems that they took a step back in their artistic evolution. “Can’t Stop” is a good song, but a song that is pretty uninspired. We hope the boys will be bolder with their music in the future, and instead of rehashing, they create new sounds.

I’m pretty hot and cold with CNBlue’s brand of music. Their Korean releases have a very distinctive pop-rock sound that I don’t always like for more than a couple of listens, though if you asked me exactly why that is, I probably couldn’t give a proper answer. I’m actually more fond of their Japanese presence; unfortunately, that comes with lamenting the fact that they’re always singing in English. But past experiences aside, I’m happy with Can’t Stop, to the extent that CNBlue finally makes music that is different on the exterior, but still true to their roots. Over the years, my gripe with the group is that they’ve gotten into the pattern of releasing the same sort of lead single ad-nauseum, so seeing the piano based “Can’t Stop” is a breath of fresh air.
What makes the song stand out though is the juxtaposition of the conservative melody in the verses with the blown-up chorus. It’s creative in the sense that it doesn’t make a conscious effort to “be artistic,” which I seem to be seeing more and more of as an increasing number of idol acts try to put pen to paper and write music. Songwriting is often about following the flow of the melody you start out with; we should be able to guess where you’re going without feeling like we’ve already been told where the the destination is. I guess one could call it a form of storytelling where the listener latches on to the familiar such that she can wade through what she doesn’t know. It’s a fine line that musicians tread between telling and showing; active and passive; artistic and pretentious–CNBlue survives it and then some with their title track.
The rest of the album is similar in aura. It doesn’t boast much, yet it doesn’t disappoint either. The songs flow together naturally within the boundaries of CNBlue’s abilities, all the while presenting something that will impress listeners. Here’s my favorite track, “Cold Love”:
CNBlue isn’t quite at the point where they can create a full immersion through their music (like popular band counterparts Jaurim and Nell); nevertheless I like watching CNBlue start developing towards that point, in theory at least. Do I think CNBlue will get to the point that they “become one with the music?” (Goodness, that phrase sounds so archaic, if not hackneyed.)
No, not at all. I don’t think it will get there, nor do I want it to go there, for it will sacrifice the identity of the band. CNBlue’s broad reach exists because it makes pop-rock music effortlessly fun and relentlessly catchy. Each track flies by without another thought, existing as the epitome of simplified deliciousness. I don’t want to always have to think about what I listen to, be it good or bad, and CNBlue delivers the good side of a lion in sheep’s clothing.
K-pop is a mixed bag of hits, misses, and troll works–in this world, CNBlue stands out as a consistently decent band. No matter how many times I get annoyed at them for constantly releasing what is virtually the same song rehashed, I’m going to give their album plenty of listens. Can’t Stop is no exception to that rule. In fact, I could say that Can’t Stop takes one step further than just being decent, which makes the EP quite the success for the band. You don’t really need much more than that.
What do you all think of Can’t Stop? Which song did you like best?

By IDELLE
原帖:http://seoulbeats.com/2014/02/cn-blues-new-mini-album-cant-stopped/
Bullet
他们对永不停止的生命与爱情的承诺(“Can’t stop me now, can’t stop me now / I can’t stop, I can’t stop loving you”)如同为他们注入了新的力量,使他们的声音变强烈。
“Like A Child/ Just Like Heaven/ 响彻世界的旋律”,这首歌反映了CNBLUE想要制作积极向上的,能带来启发的音乐。

CNBLUE ‘Can’t Stop’ album review (Dionoseoul)
February has been laden with great comebacks and good albums so far, but I’ll make a bold statement and say that CNBLUE‘s mini album has been the best this year. ‘Can’t Stop‘ is also the band’s most musically-matured album thus far, taking all the good elements from previous albums like ‘Bluetory‘, ‘First Step‘ and ‘Re:BLUE‘ and molding them into this wonderfully put together album.

1. Can't stop
With a piano introduction and accompaniment, title track ‘Can’t Stop’ on first listen, actually sounds more like a track from FT Island. Being from the same label, both bands face the risk of ‘sounding the same’. Perhaps it’s due to the vocalists’ recognizable voices, but there’s always an unexplainable difference in their styles of music of the same genre.
Take ‘Can’t Stop’ for example, if FT Island were the artiste for it, the whole song would probably have been the same pace all the way, with a lead up to the bridge and a possible guitar solo to follow right before the last chorus. CNBLUE spices up this ballad by adding in a double time chorus which definitely kicks the song up by a notch, making the piece more exciting and more… well, CNBLUE-ish. I really like how the chorus adds more intensity and conviction, which is apt because of the lyrics ‘can’t stop me now, can’t stop me now‘, yet it doesn’t lose its tenderness completely because of Yonghwa‘s airy falsettos. Such a great song.
2. Diamond girl
In an album full of ballads, this groovy track stands out prominently from the rest of the songs and is one that listeners will keep coming back to. It’s a sound that BOICEs will find very familiar. ‘Diamond Girl‘ is really catchy and along with the playful brass section, there’s even a hint of flirtatiousness. Ah, what we’d do to be CNBLUE’s ‘d-i-a-m-o-n-d girl‘.
3. Cold love
‘Cold Love’ is an intense rock ballad that portrays the heartbreak of a man after a break-up. With lyrics like ‘My heart stops at this cold love, my heart breaks into pieces. My breath stops at this sick love, my breath slowly dies‘ and ‘A sonata of farewells, words I know without even hearing them‘ really hits listeners in the gut. With strong electric guitar licks and melancholic minor chords, I can only imagine how impressive this song will sound live.
4. Sleepless night
Composed by Jonghyun, ‘Sleepless Night’ is a sweet track where a guy thinks about the girl he likes. Making use of the difference in their voice qualities, Jonghyun who has a naturally sweet and smooth sings the acoustic-driven verses while Yonghwa takes the reigns for the choruses with his slightly stronger voice. Now that’s how you make full use of vocals in a band!
5. Love is
Here’s another song that fits Jonghyun’s voice to a T. I was actually a teeny weeny disappointed when Yonghwa took over. Swooning aside though, it’s a nice ballad that would make it into an OST of a Korean drama. Unfortunately it isn’t very memorable as compared to the rest of the songs.
6. Like a child
Probably my favourite track from the album, ‘Like A Child’ sounds like a cross between bands likeColdplay and The Script. The strings, piano and drum beats during the parts without the vocals really drive the song forward. It’s the kind of song you listen to when you feel like you need a pick-me-up – the melody, instrumental and lyrics are all really uplifting. Absolutely awesome closing to a great album.
The first song I ever heard from CNBLUE and instantly fell in love with was ‘Y…Why?’ off their debut mini album, ‘Bluetory‘, and as much as I like their signature rock songs (sprinkled with some quirkiness), I’ve always been secretly hoping that they release an album with ballads as their main focus. Sure, it might not be what the band is known for, but ballads that make listeners feel are difficult to write and express, which is why I think ‘Can’t Stop‘ is CNBLUE’s best offering to date. Both K-pop and K-rock fans will find this album easily digestible and enjoyable, and it’s definitely one of 2014′s must-listens.
