During the winter holiday, I read A Brief History of Time.
This book involves so much knowledge that I couldn’t write all the details in it, so I just say something I feel interesting .
About the time , do you know what is time? You may have a rough impression,but can you give a exact definition ? Before I read this book , I’ll always say “ Time is time, just like space is space.”
Nowadays, general people think time is as absolute as space. Whoever measure the time of the same event,or measure the length of the same object,they will get the same result. Based on this opinion, we can get the velocity: V (velocity) = S(spatium) / T(tempus).
This book gave me a new idea. If we regard time and velocity are absolute, we can get the space:S = V * T . In fact, in the theory of relativity, one meter is the length light runs in 0.00000003335640952 s. Now we find a interesting fact that time and space can not be separated from each other, they are a whole and they can’t be speak alone. They are space-time.
In view of gravitation, is our space-time is flat? We always think it is true. But here is a fact that sometimes light does not travel in straight lines. When passing close to the sun, it should experience some deflection. In our opinion, light has not mass, so this deflection isn’t caused by the gravitation. But why?
Give up the old view. Our space-time is not flat. It is bent because of the gravitation. Our earth moves around the sun. It is not because the earth is attracted by the sun but because the gravitation of the sun make space-time bend. The earth is only moving in a straight line in bend the space-time. Light is as same as the earth. It is just travel in straight lines in bend the space-time, thought in our eyes, it is deflected. Now we can find another interesting fact that space-time should be studied together with the object in it. And there is no point in studying space-time that nothing in it.
About black hole, I have learned a little knowledge before I read the book, so it is easier for me to understand than space-time. But a example in the book about black hole terrify me. If I stand on a star that will become a black hole soon, the gravitation acting on my leg from the star will much larger than that acting on my head because the farther an object is from the star, the less gravitation from the star it is acted on. In this case, I will be stretched like a noodle! But soon I will feel nothing. Everything will be over.，my time, my feeling, my thinking……Oh, there’s nothing that can terrify me, because there’s no thinking.
Although the book brings new knowledge that make me able to answer some question I can’t answer before, but is it true? Long ago people believe that the world is on the turtle tower. Now we all know it is wrong. But how can we think our opinion is true?
